Foreign car manufacturers keep the line UAW

"Member of the United Auto workers is to announce a shirt ' United we stand' at a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the"battle of release."

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com of mysteries
Late last month, the United Auto workers quietly the 75th anniversary celebrated the historic engagement with clubs by the Ford Motor Company The event, which came as the "battle of release" became known, ended years resistance to organize the Union drive, effective anchoring of one of the most powerful companies in the modern labor movement.

But now, weakened by a sharp decline of membership, is what some believe is a generally hostile national mood and jahrelanger forced concessions, the UAW, is an equally important and perhaps even tougher struggle. One that could determine the future of not only the UAW, but the American automotive industry, and perhaps even the American movement itself.

While UAW Detroit's big three manufacturers who continue, it could but completely to gain representation privileges for the so-called transplant lines now through almost all of the large foreign automobile manufacturers BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen. Prevent an observer to win workers critical for the long-term survival of the Union in these transplants, and UAW leaders apparently believe that their best chance at the big Nissan plant in Canton, Miss., may, where the Union located in the large organization's car.

"I think you will see an unprecedented effort" to organize the transplants, said Harley Shaiken, a work Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in an interview.

In fact, the Organization has driving his top priority since assuming that post in 2010 UAW President Bob King. He has openly warned that failure of the UAW could threaten survival. Since membership only more than 1.5 million in the year 1979 have the UAW roles on just under 400,000, fell - with push-to clerical and health care workers and others sign outside the automotive industry.

Despite heavy cost to reduce, the UAW is now running an operating deficit and open up its financial reserves, notes analyst and broadcaster John McElroy, host "AutoLine: Detroit."

"they have to him give a try, since they no choice," McElroy said. "But it is hard to see how she could succeed this time." You try to organize in a right to-work is a general anti-union attitude. "

If the UAW a third of a century ago reached its peak, dominated Detroit-based car manufacturer by an overwhelming majority the American market. But there were ominous signs of the one in the works change. Arising from the second the oil crises of the 1970s Mideast, began motorists by the thousands, then millions switch to Japanese imports.

With strong political pressure, Honda a small motorcycle plant in Marysville, Ohio, and in November 1982 added the first North American assembly plants. Today, virtually every major foreign manufacturers from Europe, Japan and South Korea has followed. Honda, produces mainly now about 90 percent of the vehicles, which it sold in the United States in factories in the North American free trade agreement. Nissan and Toyota are not far behind and, if at all, the foreign manufacturer expand its presence on the skewed exchange rates. Volkswagen opened a factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last year is already more layers add and add a mirror-image property talks within a few years.

So far, only three have been transplant organised facilities - and then, only facilities as joint ventures between U.S. and Japanese manufacturers in the life. Even worse for the Union, the new United motor manufacturing, Inc. joint venture between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, California, was closed, and Mazda is to abandon the joint venture with Ford in suburban Detroit. It remains only the Mitsubishi plant in normal, Illinois, originally a joint venture with Chrysler, trade unions organized.

Organize the rest who became transplants a goal any UAW leader since the mid of 1980s and the Union that as far as a vote twice mile long twice, in fact last Assembly plant in Smyrna, Tennessee in the Nissan. Although it rejected was more than two-to-one in 1989 and re-released in 2001. Efforts somewhere else not even achieved the vote.

UAW organizers believe that a rift in the Nissan other U.S. plant to have found; Workers at the Canton are estimated $1.50 per hour less than the reported $26.50 earned paid in Smyrna. Then again, the Mississippi plant pays also an average $10 more than the prevailing wage in this State and workers extensive services get, the heavily reduced prices for new cars and auto insurance. In the meantime, the UAW has pain remind workers, the Nissan released a single hourly employee store in the United States has not since establishment

In a statement, UAW President King also complained, that the carmaker is not only to make his point attempts but workers subjected to has his anti-Union message to extensive "interrogations" and daily sessions more - the company calculates negative.

If there is something that could work in favor of the Union the bones tiring schedule workers, especially since both Nissan workers in Canton and Smyrna ramp-up production of the all-new Altima are 2013 subject to - the company believes that it can enter large mid-sized sedan and long-time head of the Toyota Camry to overturn the high-profile leadership in the segment.

While the start of production at the Smyrna Plant last month, Bill Krueger, Deputy Chairman of the Nissan Americas, played, the burden when it comes to adding a new third layer. "It allows us to our work force (in Smyrna) with 11 and 12-hour shifts, (no longer) burden" something he noticed results "in the factor fatigue.", if in the comprehensive extension for a continued time

In the early part of the 20th century, trade union leaders, to shed blood, often had to organize their efforts. First President of the UAW, Walter Reuther, was seriously injured during a battle with Ford Club on a transfer of the manufacturer's giant river Rouge complex leads.

There is little chance a similar confrontation with transplantation. But organizers expect union to shed their blood in their drive to store the UAW much sweat and tears, if not.

The search is for America's ugliest car

The search is for America's ugliest car

The Detroit Bureau

Is this America's "sweetest lemon"?

By Paul A. Eisenstein the Detroit BureauWe, all have seen rusted out, dinged up lemons, paint, peeling, bumpers are missing and hang bumpers with a bungee cord. But which of them is really America's ugliest car? That is what the people of Hagerty insurance - want to find out and the winner among the losers might be for a sweet surprise in the context of the second annual "quest for America's cutest lemons."

The main prize is an all expenses paid trip to the year's most exclusive automotive event, Monterey classic car week in California Thorsten Pebble Beach.

The winning car for the ride, occur along with rarities like a Bugatti Royale, and some equally rare gems celebrated. Accordingly, the winner of contest cutest lemons serve as Grand Marshal of the Concours d ' LeMons, now Hagerty renamed tour of lemons.

The event is a model that requires participants to come with the cheapest, rudest and crudest Junkers, who can find them. Simply to survive the race with the cars in General is considered a measure of victory.

"We believe all cars are beautiful and deserves celebrated are," said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty. "This is an opportunity, this eccentric, quirky and strange vehicles." "Many cars that were displayed once as hopeless now enjoy an enthusiastic, cult following."

Whether the winners their own cult - complete with auto groupies or not - will develop remains to be seen, but there is a growing counterculture for really horrible cars, as shown by the increasing success of today's tour of lemons.

The great race just a few kilometres take place away from the Lodge at Pebble Beach, where the 2012 Concours d'Elegance is scheduled. It is generally the most exclusive vintage car event in the world and attracts routinely to some of the rarest cars in the world compete - some only after restoration efforts, the $10 million, considerably more than the entire field on the tour of lemon to the top can.

Who risk going against America's other large lemon wants can send a photo of their car and a short description why it deserves baptized "Americas cutest lemon." Lawmakers fight end 'rent car roulette' risk

Flanked by Cally Houck, the two Announces, young daughter in a fiery rent accident in 2004, Boxer lost Senator Barbara results of rental car promises make a "constant commitment not to rent or sell all vehicles under Security remember until the bug has been fixed."

Herb white tree, the ConsumerMan
If you rent a car you should not be afraid if it is safe to drive. But alas, you do.

Federal law prohibits no rental car companies put out you but was not fixed behind the steering wheel of a car or truck, the security shall be subject to a recall.

"What they're doing now 'rent car roulette' with people's lives plays," said Rosemary Shahan, President of consumers for automobile reliability and safety (cars). "It is only common sense that if the vehicle is a security callback they should it until it is resolved is ground."

"You are really at the mercy of the car rental companies," says David Butler with Union consumers, the Department of consumer reports. "We have seen cases where people have rented a car that is been pointed out, it is still not resolved and there were real problems, accidents and even in a few specific cases, deaths."

Senator Barbara Boxer (D - CA) and Charles Schumer (D - NY) want to change the law. Last year, she led the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck safe rental car Act (S. 14450) would prohibit the rental from rental or sale of cars, which are security under a recall, until they are repaired.

The Bill is named after two sisters from Santa Cruz, California, died in a fiery crash in 2004. She popped in an 18-Wheeler, after their enterprise rental car in recommended brand. Had the car for a possible engine fire was recalled, but had not been repaired.

After the accident of the mother sisters successfully sued companies and works since this practice change industry according to.

"I not my daughters died in vain will," says me Cally Houck. "It was clear that company knew exactly what he did." Companies have reminds no corporate strategy to the rental car. "It is first and above all policy is to rent the car."

Consumer advocates hope that the safety deposit box rental get some car Act traction. In the meantime Boxer hopes to arrange the industry voluntarily its policy on the recalled vehicles prior to the busy summer season rent to change car.

"We can allow another family to endure the pain and the loss of Cally Houck and her family have been through," says Senator Boxer.

She asked three weeks ago, she sent a letter to the Managing Director of the major car rental companies to the following promise 30 days:

"Effective immediately our company makes a permanent commitment does not rent or sell all vehicles under safety recall, until the bug has been fixed."

Today, said at a press conference of on Capitol Hill, Boxer, only Hertz's commitment, approved as written. The other companies - enterprise, dollar/thrifty, and Avis - approved not the promise in their entirety and without condition.

Company says it has already changed its policy, but it would not commit to the full and permanent guarantee of required boxers promise.

Company would not speak to me something, but in a recent letter to Senator Boxer, CEO Andrew Taylor gave the answer of the company. He writes:

"Companies have in the more than eight years since the accident in 2004, which tragically claimed the lives of Raechel and Jacqueline Houck and the car rental industry with automakers to improve the existing procedure for receiving and responding to notices remind worked." "Greatly enhance these efforts, together with our commitment to our callback procedures have contributed to a similar event prevent in the hundreds of millions of transactions, renting since then, and we continue to be everything in our power to ensure that none of this ever happened."

Taylor says that current corporate policy prohibited the rental of vehicles, which is subject to a security callback until the callback fixed. Therefore he writes "no concerns regarding the security of the vehicles we have to rent."

Another potential risk
The motor vehicle safety Act prohibits a dealer from the sale of a vehicle, that security is part of a recall until it is resolved. The law does not apply to car rental companies. They can, if they choose, rent or sell a car under recall, without warning or the necessary repairs.

Consumer advocates call this an other dangerous gap, one that rent the safe car Act would close.

"What happened seems to, that the car rental companies let you, until they sell the vehicle reminds the stack", says Clarence Ditlow, Director of the Center for auto safety. "If they sell, there is no disclosure, that it is an excellent memory, so you a double whammy, that the defect is not fixed and there is now a new owner who received not the recall notice by the company car."

Agree with rental car companies that sign the Boxer promise would not sell recalled vehicles - also on the wholesale market - not be repaired.

My two cents
It is ridiculously easy for a company a rental car with a potential security risk not been fixed is. You need not to worry, that behind the wheel of a such a vehicle, if you rent a car.

You, the car rental companies do not pay thinking for the recall repair - the manufacturer. All they lose is an income while the car off the road.

This is a practice that should be already legally prohibited. Voluntary agreements can always be changed. Congress must pass the rental car safety act to ensure that no other innocent and unsuspecting customers being violated.

Chrysler Fire probe expands to 5 million SUVs

Chrysler Fire probe expands to 5 million SUVs

The Detroit Bureau

This 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee is examined under the schemes.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
Federal safety regulators have a checkpoint she started check whether millions of Chrysler made sports of utility vehicles face a disproportionately high risk catching fire in collisions rear-end almost two years ago, significantly expanded.

The national highway traffic safety investigation, started in August 2010, initially focused on 3 million Jeep Grand Cherokee between 1993 and 2004 produced. The Agency now has a 1993 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Liberty SUV further 2.1 million.

The problem seems, centered around the rear-mounted placement of the plastic gas tanks which used in the three models they more susceptible for catch can make fire. NHTSA has been 15 reported deaths and 41 injuries related to the potential problem.

According to an analysis of the Government, there is "a higher incidence of impact from the rear, fatal fire crashes for the Jeep products."

Chrysler officials to play down the problem though David Dillon, head of the Chrysler product investigations, confirmed in an interview with the Detroit News, "Grand Cherokee can have several of these events than their competitors." But overall, Dillon insisted "These vehicles essentially carry the same as their peers."

The investigation follows a complaint by the non-profit consumer group, the Center for auto safety, the placement of the gas tanks in these older Jeep off-road buggy. The tanks behind the rear axle - in the years past, generally usual - assembled, where they were allegedly prone to a following rear collision or rollover accident is dotted.

The CAS applied for the older versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee had deadly fire prices four times, the competitors - and six times higher than the newer models are not the subject of the investigation NHTSA. Chrysler denies these figures.

Like many other manufacturers, Jeep withdrew the gas tank models on its various Jeep forward of the rear axle and the protective framework in 2005.

Chrysler recognized that it numerous complaints in connection with Jeep fires without trial - when the plaintiff sign non-disclosure agreements demanding laid. The manufacturer also insisted that this is not abusive practice.

Separately, ordered NHTSA this week developing a callback liberty now cover Jeep about 350,000 SUVs from July 2003 to June 2007 produced. The service action is busy to excessive corrosion that road salt, leads to a failure of the rear suspension and possible vehicle damage can be caused.

Shaky battery manufacturer claims a breakthrough

DETROIT - during a visit by President Obama Gelobt a centerpiece of his Administration should be used assist with the production of sophisticated electrical batteries in the United States A123 systems for $2 billion in government subsidies.

Instead, the company, which has the lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, along with the rest of which the nascent industry stumbled and now threatens more ammunition to critics of the President heavy spending on new energy technologies to.

A123 had to workers at the new factory in Livonia, Michigan, partially recall a grant of 249 million, after get the battery for a new electric vehicle ground to a halt, and one expensive action financed with the promise needed cut. Completion of the factory has been delayed. The company is running short of cash and warned that if it raises more money from private investors, it is not in a position to remain in business could.

Still so much how is A123 representing technology risks of the Government programme battery also it promises. On Tuesday, a new battery technology, which the company claims is a breakthrough in the industry reveals A123 systems.

The advance is a new chemistry, providing a simpler, lighter, long-life battery, that is not necessary, could allow a system to cool or heat it used you.

The success or failure of the new technology can determine the fate of the A123. It renders promote also an early ruling about Mr. Obama of broader push to electric cars and build a domestic industry to develop and manufacture advanced batteries to run it.

Honda fit EV, review receives best-ever 118 MPGe
The president's prediction of a million electric cars on the road by 2015 seems to be given unattainable, the tepid demand, the first models on the market. So far in this year a total combined sales of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and electric cars Nissan leaf less than 10,000 vehicles. Slow sales which have become the already an election issue, and the failure of the Solyndra solar panel company has also intense criticism of the Government clean energy subsidies drawn.

In response to the Solyndra bankruptcy cost the taxpayer around half a billion US-dollars, the Department of energy has tightened controls on technology loan, in connection with electric cars and other fuel-saving. In the case of Fisker Automotive, get the faulty A123 Batteries, the Government of its lending froze when the company missed production schedules.

Executives of A123, based in Waltham, Massachusetts, say that the company has received, a slower start than expected as the market for electric cars could grow. The company recorded a loss of $125 million in the first quarter of this year as sales fell 40 percent over the previous year.

"It is softer than what we and everyone else expected," said David Vieau, Chief Executive of A123.

'Green'-models are not the money value, study shows
Still remain the big automakers has so far committed electric vehicles, and g.m A123 provides contract batteries for the Chevrolet spark, a fully electric mini car available next year.

Recently, the Government, for its part, A123 admitted an additional two years meet production targets Michigan built and earn the full $ 249 million is the financial aid that is disbursed in tranches. So far, only about half of the money to the company was given.

In addition to the factory grant A123 Department of energy received money about $ 14 million for research and development.

The Government may have funded the company, since "these guys have some new chemistry, some new ideas, rather than the ability to market the product", said Professor Prashant N. Kumta, a materials science expert at the University of Pittsburgh, started on lithium-ion batteries in the 1990s years.

He said that A123 has been "a bit disappointing" because it had been not much product on the market.

The Energy Department said it would comment on the viability of individual companies.

But a spokeswoman, Jen Stutsman, said: "the market for electrified vehicles is expected to 2017 tripled - there are new types of hybrid and electric vehicles and racing car manufacturer in every part of the world to introduce."

Alternative-fuel vehicles gain favor with driver
"The investment will help today to ensure that the jobs that support this fast growing industry here are created in the United States," she said.

Proponents of the energy programs say, it is unrealistic to expect, every Government supported company immediately thrive.

"We are ready, some of the risks for the new energy economy, to accept should be even if not, some these startups" said representative Diana DeGette Colorado, the ranking Democrat on the House energy and Commerce Subcommittee, the Solyndra investigated.

But Mitt Romney, who has attacked suspected Republican nominee for President and former Governor of Massachusetts, subsidies for energy companies as a waste of tax dollars. "If Mitt Romney is President, Government stops interfering in the market," said a spokesperson for Romney, Andrea Saul on the campaign website.

A prime example is A123 systems as one can promising venture in the harsh realities which bog automotive marketplace. Founded in 2001, the company first and foremost has manufactured focuses specifically engine spark, a minicar of General on the lithium-ion battery packs for cars like the Fisker karma and a forthcoming full electric version of Chevrolet.

But the company stumbled upon, as it might be defective batteries planned for use in the vehicle Fisker had to remember. And with the future market for electric cars in question, A123 may not survive solely on batteries for these models.

Instead A123 hopes now that the new technology which is there Tuesday, called EXT Nano phosphates revelation it helps open up new markets. The company says that eliminates the new electrolyte chemistry for heating and cooling in extreme temperatures. That would avoid the addition of expensive and heavy temperature management devices and extended battery life.

The technology could be used to produce batteries for telecommunications equipment, military vehicles, and hybrid gas electric cars, using start stop engine systems. It could provide even batteries that could be used to replace the millions of traditional lead acid batteries in cars on the road at the time.

"It's a hedge against the market for electric vehicles," said Mr. Vieau.

The company hopes that the promise of new technology helps investors, a $50 million convertible bonds offering of the company back to convince.

A battery expert said that the new technology could have immediate impact on the luxury car market extended service life.

"The car companies can advertise that this lithium-ion battery to last the lifetime of the vehicle, without replacement comes," said Ahmad A. Pesaran, engineer at the Government of the national renewable energy laboratory in Golden, Colorado

Potential customers from the automotive industry can samples testing, 2013 is to start this year with production in the first half.

Jeep Liberty SUV increased by almost 350,000 callback

The Detroit Bureau

The lower control arm in liberty rear suspension can occur excess corrosion, which can cause them to weaken and break.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit BureauJeep have problems with a problem possibly serious suspension on the mid-range-liberty model even worse, covering nearly 350,000 of the compact SUVs automakers expanding the current callback.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the lower control can occur in liberty rear suspension arms excess corrosion, which can cause, to weaken and break. In such a situation, to a loss of control and a possible crash could lead warns NHTSA.
The problem seems primarily are isolated in the snow belt regions, where the SUVS are used to clear roads and the recall includes vehicles sold or registered in countries which are Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Washington, D.C.

In March, 200,000 announced parent Chrysler Jeep Liberty SUVs from the years 2004 and 2005 model years remember. The recent announcement expanded the recall during the 2006 and 2007 model years sold vehicles cover.

Automakers get button Siri organizational units with "Eyes-free"

By Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit BureauIt, a new car is to find a USB port not hard these days. So a USB port developed specially equipped with the special cord to your vehicle-Infotainment system a to connect iPhone or other Apple device.
On the basis of Apple's plans at its annual Software Developer Conference announced that it seems that Apple have a place on the steering wheel, and would like to access.

While your recent car probably already, could enable a button to your voice command system replacement very well a second button Siri wake up have. This is Apple's proprietary voice command system, you can do that, from an objective insert navigation system to find the best synonym for "corporate arrogance." you

Apple is the button "Eyes-free" call according to the tech site Engadget. And it seems that the button would only work, an iPhone or other Apple device equipped with Siri - a update version for which is likely soon IOS Apple.

On the eyes free button would can it all kinds of applications and functions directly on your i device, can be accessed instead of the car Infotainment controls - but as more and more vehicles with iPhones are closely linked, that charge you a service like Pandora or any other app could allow. It would certainly help, you will find the nearest Apple store or Starbucks.
According to Engadget quote Scott Forstall, including Audi, BMW, Chrysler, signed already the Tsar of Apple's iOS operating system, a long list of manufacturers, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota and eyes free was reflected in some vehicles from about this time next year, so probably the big tech news for the 2014 launch model year.

What about people with BlackBerrys, androids, or Microsoft-powered phones? She would probably luck, if automakers choose the eyes make free key dual purpose - something serve the discerning Apple should accept not without a fight.

Clearly, closes the list of the manufacturers of the opt-in to develop the Microsoft of its popular sync technology not Ford. Also, KIA, which is also a Microsoft-powered Infotainment system is missing.
Hyundai, now from the list, apparently focuses on expansion of the market for its blue link system.

But even more surprising is the fact that GM with Apple despite the potential conflict between Siri and the OnStar system above link. In the meantime, Cadillac launches only a highly function Infotainment system, synchronized CUE, what happens, some of the basic Siri software to integrate. The big difference is that reached a CUE from the "cloud", but is a completely stand-alone system - but like Siri, it is able to respond to common voice commands, rather than users require learn strict command trees that require to do four or five steps, teach something as simple as a Bluetooth-equipped mobile phone.

R U creative with vanity plates? States are wary

When Whitney Calk sought a personalized license plate from a Tennessee state agency to tout her vegetarian ideals, she was annoyed when she was told no. Turns out the letters ILVTOFU can be construed to mean more than enjoying bean curd.

"When I see T-O-F-U, I see tofu," said Calk, who requested the so-called vanity plate from the Tennessee Department of Revenue last September. "I can't control the way anyone else interprets that," added Calk, a 26-year-old animal rights activist from Murfreesboro, Tenn.

The dilemma faced by Tennessee authorities last year is not unusual, as officials at motor vehicle agencies nationwide consider hundreds of thousands of personalized plate requests each year. There are an estimated 9 million personalized license plates in the United States.

The vast majority of the requests are not objectionable, but thousands offer insight not only into the boundaries of free speech but also the amount of human ingenuity expended to display seven- and eight-character insults, sexual references and descriptions of bodily functions to other motorists.

The battle to keep highways free of offensive phrases means state officials must track everything from Internet slang to foreign languages to commands like 3MTA3, which reveals its meaning when read backwards in a rear view mirror.

Virginia may be the capital of vanity plate mischief. Personalized plates in the state cost just $10 more than regular license plates — compared with $94 in Illinois and as much as $395 for a seven-character "Freedom" plate for one year in Texas. One million of Virginia's 7.8 million vehicles have them.

In 2009 alone, the state denied more than 700 plate requests including IHAV2P and IAMHIGH along with 100 requests beginning with the letter "F" and myriad proposals involving the number "69," according to state documents.

Questionable formulations are so common that a 20-person committee of motor vehicle staff members meets for an hour each month to review suspicious applications. State guidelines ban deceptive plates with letters such as FBI or confusing configurations like O0O0O and NOTAG as well as excretory, sexual, racial or drug references.

"It's the only time you get to talk like that at DMV, that's for sure," said Department of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Melanie Stokes, who sits on the review panel. Less offensive and more playful ideas, including EWOBAMA, IPUNCHU and DMYANKI, have all been reviewed and rejected at the meetings.

Some slip through. Pictures have been posted on the Internet of the Virginia-issued 370H55V — which has to be read upside-down to get the full message.

In Maryland, a software program checks requests against 4,331 banned license plate formulations, a list that includes WILDPIG, TOILET and GAY. State prisoners who make the plates also help out by identifying drug, gang or sexual references that slip by the computer and the civil servants, said Philip Dacey, a spokesman for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

"A lot of these are gray areas," said Dacey. "TOILET is on the list, and if people want to challenge it they can have a hearing."

That's what one motorist did after Maryland revoked his MIERDA vanity plate following a complaint. Though the Spanish term would seem to embody the state's ban on "scatological" references, an administrator is currently considering the man's appeal that the license plate should be interpreted as a non-vulgar reference to a form of fertilizer.

More recently Maryland attempted to revoke a plate reading WTF, an abbreviation for a three-word phrase beginning "what the ... " that is widely used in Internet chat. The agency reversed course after an investigation revealed that the plate predated the Internet, and was a reference to the motorist's waterfront home.

In Florida, the state's motor vehicle agency takes a permissive stance toward celebrations of clothing-optional bathing. O2B NUDE, BARE ALL and BE NAKED have all been deemed acceptable by the director of the agency, who nonetheless spiked 4NICK8, CAT BUTT and COW PADY, according to records released by the state.

Other states are less permissive. Utah, which faced a lawsuit in the 1990s for issuing plates with the term "Redskins" because it offended Native Americans, has recently denied"‘IH8TBYU," "MNKYBUM," and "MYSHRAZ" for being derogatory, vulgar and an alcohol reference to a popular wine.

Massachusetts' vanity application form now instructs motorists that the letters "I," "O," "Q" and "U" can only be used "as part of a word that is clearly defined and correctly spelled." California requires applicants to explain the meaning of any request.

Automakers struggle to solve 'car obesity' problem

Automakers struggle to solve 'car obesity' problem

Porsche

Porsche was able to slash weight off its seventh-generation 911 sports car through creative engineering and the introduction of aluminum and carbon fiber.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau
Americans have a weight problem, with more than a third of us estimated to fall into the obese category. It's a problem automakers are struggling with as well. Over the last several decades, the typical automobile has added hundreds of pounds, according to industry data, as it has grown longer and added more comfort, safety and convenience features.

Engineers are now struggling with how to cut all that added car flab. There are a variety of reasons why, but the biggest factor is fuel economy. The industry’s general rule of thumb is that 100 pounds equals a mile a gallon. And with automakers facing tough new fuel economy standards in 2016 and even more stringent mandates for 2025, it’s becoming critical to end the auto obesity epidemic.

The new Cadillac XTS underwent the automotive equivalent of liposuction. Though a full foot longer than the compact Caddy CTS, the 2013 Caddy sedan weighs about 100 pounds less, thanks to some creative engineering – including the use of new, ultra-high-strength steel alloys.

Porsche was able to slash nearly as much weight off the new, seventh-generation 911 sports car through similarly creative engineering and the introduction of aluminum and even carbon fiber. The maker’s 2013 Boxster is expected to see similar mass reductions.

And though it’s slightly larger than the old model, the new Nissan Altima is 79 pounds lighter than the outgoing sedan. The process wasn’t easy, company engineers stress, and required an intensive focus on literally every element of the new Altima’s design, down to the re-engineered continuously-variable transmission. The new model also switched to lighter aluminum for its trunk, roof and hood.

Nissan will achieve a significant payoff -- the base 2013 Altima rated at 38 miles per gallon on the highway -- of as much as several mpg better than the so-called Eco versions of competitors such as the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Fusion. And without the added price premium.

“Cutting mass was a major factor in getting there,” along with improved aerodynamics and powertrain refinements, said John Curl, Nissan North America’s senior product planner for the Altima project.

It’s hard to find a manufacturer that isn’t putting a premium on cutting weight. Before retiring earlier this year, Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak laid out a goal of trimming as much as 750 pounds off the weight of the No. 2 Detroit maker’s typical product.

But the process, which industry insiders have dubbed “lightweighting,” isn’t as simple as it might seem -- especially in the U.S., where people equate size with luxury.

The rule of the automotive business is that with every new model-year, “consumers expect more features and more and more safety equipment,” said General Motors designer Bob Boniface. Even that little CD changer built into the dash adds five pounds of mass, Boniface said.

Federal regulations further complicate the situation. Take the new roof crush safety standard that went into effect last year, effectively requiring manufacturers to more than double the ability of a vehicle to survive a rollover.

“You’ve got tough new safety standards that add weight at same time you have stringent new mileage standards,” complains analyst Jim Hall, of Detroit-based 2953 Analytics. “At some point, somebody’s going to have to blink.”

Perhaps, but Boniface and other industry leaders don’t expect to see regulators back off anytime soon. Instead, the pressure is on for the industry to come up with alternative solutions, whether through creative engineering or the use of breakthrough materials, such as carbon fiber.

The super-strong, ultra-light material has long been used in race cars and exotic automobile, such as the $1 million McLaren F1 supercar of a decade back. But it is a major challenge to produce, requiring extensive labor that has priced it out of use by all but the most expensive automobiles. But that may soon change.

The original McLaren F1 used a carbon fiber “tub” that took 3,000 man hours to produce. On the next-generation Mercedes-McLaren SLR it still took 400. With McLaren’s newest street car, the MP4-12C, “believe it or not, we got it down to four hours on this car,” boasts chief designer Frank Stephenson.

That model is still beyond the reach of the typical motorist, at nearly $300,000. But carbon fiber will account for 44 percent of the material used in Chrysler’s reborn Viper sports car, at a quarter the price. And BMW believes it could soon bring the cost of the material down enough to use in models like the $40,000 3-Series. It will make extensive use of carbon fiber in its new BMW i3 and i8 battery cars because the lower weight will allow greater range.

The good news is that even the newest steel alloys are getting both stronger and lighter, helping to meet new safety mandates while also reducing mass.

But analyst Hall is skeptical makers can pull several 100 pounds off the typical car, never mind 750, because of both federal rules and consumer demand. “The best makers will be able to do,” he contends, “is manage the bloat.

Designers like McLaren’s Stephenson and GM’s Boniface are more upbeat, though they admit it’s a challenge to deal with automotive obesity, much like it is for the mere mortal motorists who will have to squeeze inside their new automobiles.

Helmet law repeals raising motorcycle deaths

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau
A new report by the independent investigative website FairWarning.org finds that the trend towards giving riders the freedom to go helmet-less is resulting in a significant increase in motorcycle fatalities.

That’s precisely the opposite direction from the overall highway death trend. Despite the surge in motorcycle fatalities, overall traffic deaths last year fell to their lowest level since 1949 and on a deaths-per-100-million-miles-driven basis the figure was the lowest since records started being kept in the 1920s.

Put another way, noted FairWarning, in 1997, total motorcycle fatalities came to 2,116, one of every 20 U.S. traffic death. By 2010 that surged to one in seven, with total motorcycle fatalities increasing to 4,502.

The potential to save lives has led virtually every state in the union not only to pass mandatory seatbelt laws but, in a growing number, to increase enforcement efforts. That includes Michigan, which is in the midst of a “Click-it-or-Ticket” campaign. Yet, earlier the Midwest state became the latest to repeal its mandatory helmet law, instead requiring that bikers who want to feel the wind in the air to increase their medical insurance coverage and meet one of several additional requirements.

In the 1970s, notes FairWarning, 47 states required motorcyclists to wear helmets. With the move in Michigan that is down to just 19 – though a number of other states still require helmets for the very youngest riders and passengers.

Rick Schmitt, the author of the FairWarning.org story, notes that in a long-running and well-organized campaign backers of repeal have carefully built their case even while gagging opponents. That includes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which was hit by a 1998 rule that now blocks it from advocating safety measures at the state and local level. Biker lobbyists also “derailed a measure (federal) lawmakers envisioned to reinstate financial penalties for states lacking helmet laws,” noted Schmitt.

Advocates of helmet law repeal have been urging the federal government to shift money from enforcement to biker training. Yet a 2007 Indiana study found that drivers who completed a basic course were actually 44% more likely to be involved in an accident than those who didn’t get training – perhaps because they felt encouraged to take more risks.

“You cannot be in this battle and not be frustrated by this senselessness,” Michael Dabbs, president of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, told FairWarning.

What particularly frustrates those who want to keep helmet laws is the fact that the data overwhelmingly support their case. The survival rate of those involved in accidents who wore helmets is markedly higher than for those who didn’t, leading some to compare the simple safety devices to a medical “vaccine.”

They point to facts that show helmeted riders in moderate to severe crashes often walk away while those not wearing helmets often suffer severe head trauma – or death in otherwise insignificant incidents.

According to data NHTSA itself is now barred from presenting at the state and local level helmets saved 1,483 lives in 2009 and would have saved another 732 had everyone been wearing them.

The counter-cry is “freedom,” advocacy groups contending that bikers should have the freedom to choose.

Backed by significant amounts of cash and the restrictions on federal regulators the anti-helmet lobby has continued gaining momentum and is stepping up its campaigns in those few states, like New York, that continue to mandate helmets.

Honda Fit EV gets best-ever 118 MPGe rating

Honda Fit EV gets best-ever 118 MPGe rating

The Detroit Bureau

Honda claims the new battery-electric vehicle can recharge in just three hours.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit BureauThe new Honda Fit EV has landed a 118 MPGe federal fuel economy rating, the highest ever granted by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Scheduled to go into limited distribution over the summer the 2013 Fit EV is Honda’s first battery-electric vehicle in two decades and enters a fast-emerging market segment that will soon include offerings from most of the major automakers – as well as new start-ups like California’s Tesla Motors.

The EPA’s Combined 118 MPGe rating shoots Honda past the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, at 112 MPGe, the Ford Focus Electric, at 105 MPGe, and the Nissan Leaf, rated at 99 MPGe.

The rating, short for Miles Per Gallon-equivalent, is a means of comparing the energy used by a battery-based vehicle in terms comparable to what a motorist might expect were the vehicle running on conventional gasoline. It is calculated by dividing the distance traveled by the amount of energy used. The EPA calculates that one gallon of gasoline is equal to 33.7 kilowatt hours of electric energy stored in a vehicle’s battery pack.

In the case of the Fit EV, the Honda electric vehicle has a 20 kilowatt-hour, or kWh, lithium-ion battery pack, equal to only about 0.6 gallons of gas. But it can travel an average 82 miles on that before needing a recharge, according to EPA tests. Do the math and it works out to that 118 equivalent miles per gallon.

In terms of range, the 2013 Honda Fit EV also comes out on top when compared to the estimated 76 miles for the Focus Electric, 73 miles for the Nissan Leaf and just 62 miles for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

Of course, as with gasoline-powered vehicles, size matters and the Fit is smaller than all its battery competitors except for the Mitsubishi. Honda officials also emphasize they boosted range by reducing weight and focusing on improving the Fit EV’s aerodynamics.

Honda claims the new battery-electric vehicle can recharge in just three hours. That figure, of course, relies on having access to a 220-volt circuit with high enough amperage.

The 3-mode electric drive system produces a maximum 123 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque, which Honda Environmental Business Office Vice President Steve Center promises will be “an absolute kick to drive.”

Since electric motors generate maximum torque the moment they start spinning they generally deliver good off-the-line acceleration, though they also start running out of steam, in most cases, by the time they’ve hit about 30 mph.

And aggressive driving – along with the use of electric heat or air conditioning – will rapidly reduce battery range.

Unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, Honda plans only limited distribution of the Fit EV, the vehicle to go on sale in California and Oregon in the coming months. It will be rolled out in East Coast markets in 2013.

Demand for Fiat 500 Abarth outstripping supply

The Detroit Bureau

Fiat officials halted dealer orders for the 2012 500 Abarth though some dealers still have a few in stock.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit BureauBarely a month after launching sales of the new Fiat 500 Abarth the maker has told dealers it will no longer be able to supply orders for the rest of the 2012 model-year.

The high-performance version of what Italians call the Cinquecento has helped kick-start demand after a rough launch for the Fiat brand – which led to the ouster of the marque’s original marketing chief. But sales have surged in recent months, buoyed by more aggressive marketing and the launch of the new Abarth edition.

“The Fiat 500 Abarth is unstoppable,” Fiat brand boss Tim Kuniskis said in a statement. “Dealer orders for the Abarth dramatically exceeded the number of units we had scheduled for production. We had to schedule additional production to try and keep up with the demand. Most Abarth units are sold within one day.”

A company spokesman stressed that some Abarth models are still available at dealerships around the country though, “customers might have to look around” by calling or visiting several dealers to find one.

Fiat spokesman Ariel Gavilan added that “Due to the high demand, we are increasing production for the 2013 model-year,” the U.S. version of the minicar assembled at a plant run by partner Chrysler in Toluca, Mexico. Unfortunately for those potential buyers now waiting, the 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth won’t reach showrooms until sometime in the final quarter of this year.

“I am not surprised” to see the Abarth version sell out, said Rebecca Lindland, an automotive analyst with IHS, “because the American buyer who wants a Fiat 500 wants a fun, powerful vehicle with a manual transmission.” A stick was not offered on the original Cinquecento coupe or cabriolet models.

The same pattern of demand occurred when Mini launched its original model in the U.S. a decade ago, added Lindland. The primary demand was for the more sporty Cooper S and the John Cooper Works versions with manual transmissions.

Fiat does not break out numbers for each of the various versions of the 500, but anecdotal evidence suggests the Abarth has run up the charts since the first of the sportier model started reaching showrooms.

What may be most important to the maker is that this rising tide has lifted all of Fiat’s boats.

Launched at the end of 2010, the maker sold barely half of its original, 50,000-unit target for the 500 in 2011, leading some analysts to question whether Fiat might even survive in the States after original marketing chief Laura Soave was fired late last year – replaced by Chrysler veteran Kuniskis.

But sales have surged since the beginning of the year, May marking the fourth consecutive monthly record. Volume last month hit 4,003 vehicles, up from 1,759 in May 2011.

“This lays to rest last year’s story of slow sales,” the maker proclaimed on a website dedicated to the Fiat 500.

May marked the first full month of retail deliveries for the performance model. But observers say there are other reasons why Fiat may finally be gaining traction.

In an interview earlier this year, brand boss Kuniskis admitted to TheDetroitBureau.com that awareness for the Fiat marque was lagging in the 20% range, far behind potential competitors. That led the maker to reverse its original strategy – which focused on non-traditional marketing – and aim for the mainstream, starting with a widely watched and re-watched Super Bowl commercial starring supermodel Catrinel Menghia.

She reappeared in a second spot also featuring Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen.

The $22,000 Abarth, however, has helped Fiat shed a reputation as a “secretary’s car,” a term typically used derisively to describe a vehicle that is more show than go.

Named for Carlo Abarth, an Austro-Italians race driver who made a name tuning track versions of the original Fiat 500, the new model used a turbocharged version of the Fiat MultiAir engine to deliver 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque – a 58% and 73% bump, respectively.

Fiat expects to get another shot in the arm next year when it adds a longer version of the Cinquecento to its U.S. line-up, the Fiat 500L.

The most traffic-jammed cities in America

The good news for commuters is that traffic congestion in the U.S. decreased by an average of 30 percent last year, according to the annual National Traffic Scorecard conducted by traffic and navigation service provider INRIX in Kirkland, Wash. The bad news is that motorists in some of America’s largest cities wasted nearly 60 hours of their lives during 2011 sitting in rush-hour jams, versus driving at times when the roads were clear.

This represents the biggest drop in road congestion since 2008 when gridlock dipped by 34 percent, due largely to the nation’s precipitous financial free-fall. Over 1,400 miles of America’s major corridors suffered congestion last year, which is down from 2,300 miles in 2010. INRIX likewise attributes last year’s easing traffic conditions to the still-sputtering economy.

“The recovery on Wall Street has not yet arrived on Main Street, which means Americans are driving less and spending less,” says Jim Bak, co-author of the National Traffic Scorecard. “What these results suggest is a ‘stop n’ go economy’ where a lack of employment combined with high fuel prices is keeping Americans off the roads.”

While it ranks as the 53rd most populous city in the U.S., Honolulu tops the INRIX rankings as having the nation’s most congested traffic corridors. The study estimates that commuters in Hawaii’s largest city waste an average of 58 hours a year during peak travel times, versus the time that would have been spent on the road had there been no congestion. That’s the equivalent of burning more than seven vacation days annually while sitting behind the wheel.

The associated slide show lists the 10 cities in America having the worst traffic jams and details the average amount of time lost forever while stuck in traffic (compared to driving when cars are at their normal pace). Surprisingly, New York City was ranked “only” fourth in the survey, with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Bridgeport, Conn. rounding up the top five cities for traffic congestion.

Nationwide, the INRIX study found that commuters on the road during peak driving times in the 100 largest cities took seven percent longer to reach their destinations than if traffic was moving freely. That figure was pegged at 9.7 percent in 2010 and is 50 percent less than the all-time-high of a 13.3-minute delay measured back in 2007, when the economy was riding high and gas prices averaged $2.80 a gallon. Cities with higher-than-average job growth like Miami, Tampa, Houston and Atlanta experienced some of the biggest increases in traffic jams, while areas that experienced the largest relative drops in congestion were subjected to the highest average gasoline prices (at their April 2011 peak) including Los Angeles ($4.25), Seattle ($4.03), San Francisco ($4.25) and Honolulu ($4.48).

For those keeping score, and/or noting when to take public transportation instead, the most gridlocked morning commute hour was determined to occur on Tuesdays at 8:00 am, with Friday at 5:30 PM being the worst evening hour for commuters. Overall, national congestion peaks each weekday morning between 7:45 and 8:00 am, with average evening congestion reaching its most-maddening point between 5:30 and 5:45 pm.

The INRIX National Traffic Scorecard was based on an analysis of 200,000 road segments totaling more than 300,000 miles of major highways, arterials and city streets nationwide, with an emphasis on the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas.

Car can disappoint sales as demand slows

CNBCS Phil LeBeau reported sales of General Motors, up 10.9% compared to 11.4% estimate, while Toyota sales 87.3% vs. 89.5% estimates reported.

Updated at 12: 55 pm (ET):DETROIT - new car sales came in weaker than expected in may, driven by disappointing results from General Motors, Toyota and Chrysler, the demand from the first four months showed slowed.

The sales results, in combination with Friday anemic jobs report, suggested that the industry could be hurdles in his recovery from a recession before four years face, pulled the GM and Chrysler bankruptcy.

"Of course the economy probably a touch is slowing down", said Gary Bradshaw, Portfolio Manager with Hodges capital management, the Ford owns shares. "I still think that auto sales continue from the last year to improve, but it is a struggle." "There are many headwinds to us."

Nissan sales revenues even weaker than expected in may, when Ford numbers behind what had predicted Barclays and Edmunds. Nissan and Ford sales rose by 21 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

GM sales rose by 11 percent, while Chrysler and Toyota rose by 30 per cent and 87 per cent, respectively.

Economists of Thomson Reuters respondents expect an annual turnover for the month of 14.5 million vehicles, but both GM and Ford suggested that the rate far below the would come.

GM expects the annual sales to approximately 14 million to finish, while Ford forecast a final number, including medium and heavy trucks, in the mid 14 million. Medium and heavy trucks annually account for usually about 300,000 sales.

Some analysts and industry officials have said the lower price part of the weather warmer than expected this year was that drew buyers into dealer of showrooms, sales pull off the spring buying season. In addition, falling prices have at the pump reduces pressure on consumers to gas guzzlers get rid and buy more fuel-efficient car.

Sales slower in May would be a step down from a 14.4 million sales pace of the previous two months and 15.1 million in February.

"Since our last monthly sales over the course of the last 30 days or so call, economic indicators came only a little softer than in the first quarter" Senior Economist Jenny Lin in a Conference said Ford.

Auto sales of one of the bright spots in the economy for several months have been and the monthly sales offer an early snapshot of consumer demand results.

Shaky recovery
Consumer confidence and mixed economic data which shows that the recovery was how shaky shot in the last three years have sales this year despite cooling. On Friday the Ministry of labour reported increase in jobs in may, which was the weakest in a year, and employers far fewer jobs added in the previous two months than previously reported.

"While a restore point some signals upwards, some reasonable, some see below", said Jonathan Browning, head of Volkswagen AG operations. "While there are some short-term fluctuations of these indicators are, stay these underlying trends in a positive direction."

A factor in fueling the growth car became American replacing their aging increasing need for cars and trucks, which now a record 10.8 years on average.

"The economy continues to slowly grow and absolutely need to catch up will be a strong force, and maybe some volatility to overcome", said GM U.S. sales Chief, Don Johnson, in a Conference. "But the economy grow further with a positive rate for catch up must be released."

Higher fuel prices in the first quarter prompted to disable some consumers up to older, less fuel-efficient models in fuel economy. 63 Percent of the traders said after Swiss Bank UBS higher gasoline prices increased demand in the first quarter.

With gas prices fall again can the pace of new cars for sale in the second and third quarters, but the underlying consumer appetite for new cars and trucks due to demand remains strong, said UBS analyst Colin Langan moderating.

GM may sales rose from 221.192 in the same month last year to 245.256 vehicles.

Ford's sales rose to 216.267 vehicles from 192.102 in the same month last year, as the number 2 of the U.S. automakers consumer incentives by more than 9 percent compared to the previous month increased according to Edmunds. Incentives in the industry rose by nearly 4 percent from April to May to $2.135 per vehicle.

Ford also said that it plans to build 690,000 vehicles in North America, in the third quarter to 5 per cent on the same period last year.

Toyota sales 87 percent to 202.973 vehicles. At Chrysler, controlled by Italy's Fiat, sales to 150.041 vehicles from 115.363 in the same month last year.

GM shares were by 2.7 percent to $21.59 and Ford shares up 3.8 percent to $10.16 on Friday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange. Wall Street stocks were largely lower on the Sauer report jobs.

GM to 24 percent of the US pension liability

DETROIT - General Motors co. some U.S. employed pensioners offer a lump sum pension buyout as part of a series of measures announced, on Friday, which is cut to 24 percent of the U.S. pension obligations.

The largest U.S. automakers offer one-time lump-sum payments to around 42,000 pensioners and their surviving beneficiary. You must make a decision by July 20.

Also a group contract will purchase annuity from Prudential, GM, remaining employed pensioners and those choosing the lump sum not to manage the numbers now and future benefit payments GM.

The two movements are cut U.S. $26 billion of GM pension obligations and 118,000 its U.S. pensioners affect. GM is a major concern for investors of nearly $109 billion and is one of the few issues management remains unchanged, while the Obama bailout of GM in 2009.

"We feel, it is important that both these obligations to mitigate future growth as we have been doing and where today the actions actually reduce the obligation," Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann said during a conference call.

The responsibility for the management of pensions for pensioners relieve the amendments to GM. There is no change to the pension underfunding of the plans, the GM of its represented by United Auto workers offering workers.

The pension changes not employed pensioners are entitled to pension, health care, life insurance and a vehicle discount.

Both transactions are completed expected to end of this year. GM said that between $3.5 billion and $4.5 billion in bar to acquire it, the Group Pension Fund contract and improvement of the funded status of pension plan for current employees paid.

"The company financial flexibility improved as we are less exposed to the financial volatility and calls for cash, which, we experienced our flexible in the past, which in turn improve have providing money for uses alternative", Ammann said.

A growing concern for decades as U.S. automakers share to foreign automakers in their home an albatross for the US industry with the sector downturn was five years ago lost pension costs.

Teen new requirements could reduce driving deaths

Teen new requirements could reduce driving deaths

The Detroit Bureau

Emergency teams struggle to save young people in a nighttime accident involved.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, according to government statistics, but a new insurance industry report suggests that the numbers could sink, by restrictions on teen drivers tighten laws.

Car crashes for one of three people responsible reported among young people are for highway safety projects that could be saved through the use of more restrictive licenses annually at least 500 lives every year the Centers for disease control, but the new study of insurance. In some Member States, which IIHS said it expected the mortality rate among teen drivers of less than 50% fall.

The new study emphasised it best-practice guidelines adopted, called from various Member States, including driving a ban with Teen passengers, limited night rides and a request for the supervised.

"Even the best States can do better", says Anne McCartt, senior Vice President for research at IIHS. "There is room for improvement in all areas, and States could see claims immediate reduction in fatal crashes and collision, once regulations are in place to strengthen."

States with the toughest constraints the sharpest decline in teen of fatalities compared to those with less restrictive policy signed the IIHS reported. The Institute isolated five specific policies which seem to help:

Later driving age, 17 in New Jersey; They allow later age 16 in district of Columbia, New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, and five other States; At least 65 hours of supervised driving in Pennsylvania;Night driving ban in Idaho, South Carolina; AndA ban teen passengers in 15 States and Washington, D.C.
The IIHS report indicates that all but nine States now have to allow so-called graduated driver's licenses or GDLs, the young people to build up experience and maturity behind the wheel. There are three levels: a period of supervised driving under a learner who allow, meanwhile licensing, certain restrictions, followed by a license that manages full permissions.

Since the year 2000, the IIHS has been assessed the various countries according to the effectiveness of their teen driving regulations. Initially only six States and D.C. evaluation "Good". Today however is the up to 36 States and district. Another seven earn now "faire" reviews, with seven other rated "Marginal."

But the IIHS says that the steam run the transition to more stringent restrictions has and it move to state legislators to act a new strategy that moves the public get a sense of how many lives could, with stricter rules be saved. Click here , to the computer on the IIHS Web site access.

South Dakota, could for example see a full 63% drop in fatal crashes, the IIHS projects and a decline in the collision claims by 37%.

Even States which have adopted many of the proposed restrictions, could be better, says McCartt. By the further increase of his age minimum license, increasing driving hours monitored and drive a night add constraint, the insurance would trade group projects Connecticut of a 17% drop in fatal crashes and 13% reduction in claims see collision.

McCartt recognizes that while further restrictions it supports may be difficult is the evidence that legislators Act taking into account the proposals are always "politically popular."

Silver lining behind the may car sales data

How does the weak economic reports strong auto sales? Senior Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds discuss analyst and CNBC's Phil LeBeau.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com of mysteries
May display an another large storm surge is its position the US auto industry as one of the bright spots in the sputtering American economy shoring sale. But also with some decision makers report sales, which almost doubled last month, there are some potentially disturbing questions behind the may figures.

Analysts and industry officials remain unsure whether the auto market can keep its current, rapid pace, especially when others start economic factors, such as for example the strong decline in the growth of jobs and a slide in the stock market, put off to potential buyers.

But for the moment, the may figures let reason to hope, that the car sales exceed also cautious earlier predictions for 2012.

Among the optimists is analyst Jesse Toprak, data tracking company TrueCar.com. "Further recover sales and consumers feel highly satisfied purchase vehicles well, said Toprak, consumers noting that four brands, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia, the highest average selling prices achieved - the figure actually after discounts - in its history numbers."

Toyota saw its sales in the meantime increase of more than 87 percent for the month, a significant turning point for a manufacturer, the strong declines in large parts of the 2011 suffered. Naturally, the Japanese giant profits must be relativized. Sell in May last year reflects a low point during the impact of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, who all finished but leave hopelessly short of product to sell the Japanese car industry dealer.

But Toyota officials insist, there were other factors behind the may revival. "Our growth was spearheaded by the success of new products of the Camry sold been and Prius family, part of the most aggressive product launch in our history", said Bob Carter, Toyota division general manager.

Other Japanese manufacturers Honda, which was also hard hit by the Japanese disaster March 2011 written an only slightly less impressive 47.6 percent sales jump, 46 percent of the flagship Honda brand and 62 percent or the brand Acura.

In the meantime, Japan's second-largest producer, Nissan, saw its sales "only" 20.5 percent-including the Nissan and Infiniti brands increase. But not quite so serious production-related revenues in 2011 as the other two members of Japan's suffering Nissan three large.

A number of superlatives generates the may numbers: General Motors, with an increase of 11 percent on the previous year, the best sales since August 2009, while the Government's cash for clunkers program written.

Audi was one of the several decision makers reports its best-ever may, when the German siblings VW recorded the best may since 1973. Nevertheless, Jonathan was Browning, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America - includes also Bentley - surprisingly restrained during a conference call with journalists.

GM recently raised its forecast for 2012 to a possible high of 14.5 million vehicles of all raised, Browning, said VW now will remain while with a more conservative estimate of 13.9 million.

"We are not prepared, change our forecast," said Browning, warns that there are many economic uncertainties, that 2012 could lead to a softening of demand in the second half. In fact Browning found it especially softening and then ends with a big bang over the holiday weekend "ebbing and flowing" in the market opening in May was, strong month.

Analyst art Spinella of CNW marketing, said that his company "Zittern Index" showed itself to a measurement car interested parties are as concerned. And there are many reasons, worried, be from the uncertain U.S. labour market to the decline of the stock market, without regard to the potential crisis in the euro zone.

On the other hand, reported AAA nationwide fuel prices have on average about 27 cents per gallon since their peak in early April fell. And some oil industry observers believe that some parts of the country pump prices as low as $3 instead of $4 to $5-a-gallon pay if by summer 2012 could see expected soon.

Showing sliding demand and low prices for certain vehicles, small, high mileage offers already. In the new car market demand for fuel-saving models maintain a healthy pace, most manufacturers reported - but GM said that that its full-size pickups 27% in may, more than double the manufacturer's total sales revenue.

An alternative explanation is that as one of the basic tools of the American working class, the increase in sale recommend pick up could now faster than Wall Street main street recovers.

CNBCS Phil LeBeau reported sales of General Motors, up 10.9% compared to 11.4% estimate, while Toyota sales 87.3% vs. 89.5% estimates reported.

'Green'-models are not the money value, study shows

The Detroit Bureau

Toyota Prius C is "Much fuel, but no thing", according to the consumer reports study.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
Hoping to squeeze every last mile out of a gallon of gasoline? Automakers were have launched a flurry of new "eco" models designed to do just that. But a new report warns that the minimal additional mileage not value the hefty price - in some cases as much as 38 years go back to lower fuel costs would require.

The new study by consumer reports raises questions about a variety of conventionally powered eco models like the Ford focus SFE, Chevrolet Cruze eco and Honda Civic HF. But it was also skeptical promised by some hybrid models, benefits, such as the new Toyota Prius C, which it is declared, "fuel economy, but not a business."

Lenders loosen car loans

The problem is that the savings are compensated by strong first bonuses average between $500 and $800 on standard models. In some cases, the savings in fuel can however as little as $20 per year. And, in some cases consumers wind Dynamics victims on cheaper Interior and bad way further.

Chevy Cruze eco is a prime example, CR according to researchers. The special model learns some aerodynamic "tweaks" and gets low rolling tires - the price in comparison to similar Cruze lt add $800 but even increased fuel consumption only 1 mile per gallon, to a mid-pack 27 mpg in the city. Highway mileage jumps 4 mpg, 40.

It's season drive. Why are gas prices tumbling?

For the typical owner the income, only $20 per year would save the typical driver speed 12,000 miles a year and numbers $4 per gallon - and a 38-year "Payback" to the Cruze eco require additional cost. Savings would a little better, added the not-for profit publication, for those who follow much highway.

The Honda Civic HF pins on one another $800 to low rolling tires, rear spoiler and closed underbody aerodynamic turbulence reduced. The results in a 3 mpg jump in the compact model kilometers, to a combined 33 mpg. But even annual mileage savings are a modest $135, i.e. a payback period of 6 years - which is longer than most Americans keep a new car.

And the magazine gave the entire driving dynamics of civic HF a bad review, the "it in the bottom places" all small sedans.

The magazine was much more optimistic about the "solid feel" the Ford focus SFE - short for Super fuel economy - which flush wheel covers, a rear spoiler, and the higher mileage tyres. The SFE package gets a bump 3 mpg, $145 per year would save 31 mpg combined, which appreciates consumer reports. The package costs only $495 so payback is one shorter 3.5 years.

VW Beetle: mini 911 or a big mistake?

While Toyota Prius hybrid often has praised original model by CR, the magazine report is far less kind to the new Prius c, the compact addition to the expanding Prius "Family." While the new model city mileage rating of 37 mpg is "stellar", the compromise on the General look and feel of the vehicle is.

At a price of only $20.850 explains, "receive the magazine drivers what they pay." "This subcompact hatchback, with the Yaris linked lackluster Toyota, suffers from a stiff ride, very noisy cabin, slow acceleration and cheap-looking Interior."

"Overall the Prius C test result, said consumer reports, puts it slightly under his chief competitors, the mediocre Honda insight, and is too low for us to recommend the model."

Pistons buzz is Cadillac shake up the image

Helps a brand new model slipping sales boost Cadillac? CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports on the efforts of major General Motors has to revive sales caddy.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com of mysteries
Cadillac is hoping what shake - quite literally - with the introduction of its new flagship sedan.

XTS called, it features a new "awareness driver package", that hidden can place before a car into the blind spot, meaning, if the driver accidentally slides into the adjacent lane or if there is a potential for a collision with the car forward. Instead of flashing lights or sound a buzzer, begins the sedan driver's seat to vibrate.

But Cadillac wants to shake up the established order in the U.S. luxury market. There was a time, not many years ago, when the brand from General Motors mainly dominated its competitors, import / domestic. Car is now little more than an L2 competitors at home and all but forgotten in other countries.

"We want to regain our coat as the standard of the world", Don Butler, Cadillac said Vice President of marketing, during the first drive of the new XTS, "and we think that we have to do the login information."

The XTS replaces effectively two outgoing Caddy models, M., and DTS. But perhaps more importantly, it is part of a wave of new products, which promises to be the GM Division, roll-out in the coming years. The large sedan goes against the BMW 5 series and Mercedes-Benz E-class. The new ATS, which will start slightly later in the year, addressed such as the BMW 3 series and Audi A4.

Butler tips on the whole, the Cadillac one still up market in the not-too-distant future production version of CIEL concept car is moved, which raves on the auto show circuit moved this year. A prototype of an updated, could according to sources on next January Detroit Auto show presented.

Even then, Cadillac officials admit her line-up still relatively thin are compared to competitors such as Mercedes. The German manufacturer now offers a score of coupes, sedans, convertibles, crossovers, sports car and all-terrain vehicle.

While Caddy do not intend a one match it will roll out at least one brand new model annually for the foreseeable future continue to GM CEO Dan Akerson during an appearance on the Beijing motor show in April announced.

"they are still a work in progress," said analyst Aaron Bragman, IHS automotive. "But their share will grow simply by entering new segments."

It is not the first time that Cadillac hoped has for a turnaround. It started a much-touted 'Renaissance' with the introduction of the first generation CTS sedan a decade ago. This led the manufacturer so called art & science design theme, an edgy look, which vaguely back sounded distinctive and dominant as the huge fins 59 Eldorado to offerings of Cadillac.

But a number of subsequent products, such as such as the short-lived XLR Roadster, failed expectations, which tend to all revive but steam with the STS and DTS.

Cadillac began around things back on track with the introduction of a second generation CTS, especially if it packs from the CTS Coupe, which considered most distinctive offer in today's luxury car market. And it tightened its performance V-series, the latest CTS-V, one of the most powerful cars on the market.

CTS a core remains line-up, the Cadillac even though the next generation sedan slightly larger, better between the compact ATS and XTS full-size position will grow. In the meantime, show sources, is that at least one more crossover utility vehicle in the works as a complement to the current SRX model.

The SRX is proposing that Caddy could provide some surprises. The original version was largely ignored, but the new update is a challenge of the long-time market leader in the segment of the Lexus RX now.

Like its competitors caddy is meanwhile an increasing emphasis on technology, including not only the new driver package consciousness, but also the Cadillac CUE system. In contrast to competitors infotainment systems, a driver - such as pairing allows CUE a Smartphone or a target type - in plain English, rather than a complex hierarchy of rigid commands learn to type commands.

But commands that U.S. buyers is back in the exhibition space a different subject entirely. Until 1990, are expected to routinely one sell Cadillac quarter-million vehicles per year. Last year hardly 152,000 was almost two thirds of the volume of the main rivals such as BMW, Lexus and Mercedes. Worse, despite repeated efforts, Cadillac largely able to gain traction on the European market.

China is a different story. Where GM is itself the dominant manufacturer and Cadillac is fast on ground win. Analysts like Bragman believe it will make even better, as soon as it starts production models like the XTS it this year bypassing hefty import duties. CEO Akerson told reporters during the Beijing show that his goal is it Chinese Cadillac sales to 180,000 a year in a half decade.

There was a time when Caddy defined race. The name, Cadillac, was emphasized in the output 1913 by Webster's dictionary as the definition of the ultimate perfection - something the manufacturer with a copy of the dictionary on display in Beijing.

While the term still in use, has a long time since Cadillac as the apex of the luxury car market it was seen. But not from lack of trying. In its 2009 bankruptcy, GM is intent on regaining his broader global leadership and Cadillac, the simple, that resurrection must be.

Shady car dealers to military customers

Herb white tree, the ConsumerMan
Cody Cameron, a marine stationed in Jacksonville, n.c., burned when he bought a used car. He paid $17,000 last year on a 2004 Nissan 350 z with 60,000 miles it. He thought that car would take him a long time. It did not come.

"I drove the car for about two weeks." One day all the studs on the left rear tire fetched just way and the tires on the road moved, "he recalls."

He was able to pay for the repairs the traders. But about a week later, the tunnels broke again. They refused this time pay.

Cameron could afford, he took the car to a different dealer, hope, money for a trade-not the repairs to something. That's when he was in a wreck his car discovered. The AutoCheck report showed extensive damage to the left side of the vehicle.

"When I bought it, I specifically asked the seller - several times - if it had been in a wreck," Cameron tells me. "And he said no." "There were no accidents."

Right now, camerons 350-Z not shut. But he is still on the hook for the payments. He is suing the dealer.

It is a common problem
It is regrettable. Shady car dealers goal often military customers. Unethical sellers see it as easy marks.

Holly Petraeus, Director of Office of boots Affairs at the consumer financial protection Bureau, warns military personnel on alert be when on a car much foot.

"They have these places, cars for a sell the spring up to military facilities very marked-up price and then put on top of that used high finance," says she.

Vulnerable customers can be military personnel. You are young. This can be your first car purchase. They often have a limited or negative credit history.

Petraeus (whose husband Gen David Petraeus will be Director of the CIA) tells me everyone in the service is fear of something that they could their screening costs. A bad credit report is pulled the No. 1 reason for this distance.

"they are aware that", she says. "So someone can threaten and say:" If you don't pay then you'll in trouble, "which is of course the last thing they want."

Holly Petraeus is not the only alarm bells. Advise military customers to fraudulent sales practices ensure the auto experts at Edmunds.

"Military personnel have a steady income." The Government pays you every month for their service. Unscrupulous traders know that are really trying to get into this source of income ", says Edmunds of Carroll Lachnit."

Sales representative warns Edmunds military families looking after crafty to use the patriotism as part of their sales pitch.

"We try be aware of them that appeal on their pride or flattering them, cannot be sincere appreciation for their military service, but only another way to their hooks in this content," Lachnit said.

Auto dealer rip-offs affect mission readiness
Rosemary Shahan, President of consumers for auto reliability and safety, having a long list of "unscrupulous practices" says unethical traders use to military buyer. These include: fake loan applications, they know bait-and-switch financing and selling a car, was to say in a wreck without the customers.

"Car sales and financing scams cause problems of financial readiness for military service members and their families lead," she says.

Two years ago, during the Dodd-Frank Act to reform of financial Congress discussed air force Secretary Michael Donley wrote a letter to the legislature. He said:

"I am sure you agree that plane, which in turn reduces financial questions to home be distracted readiness." "Protection from unscrupulous auto loan enables our plane to focus on their Hauptaufgabe--fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace." (See full letter)

Secretary of the army wrote a similar letter, John McHugh:

"Over the years many of our soldiers have been predatory lending practices to the victim and contracts for prohibitively expensive financial products, supported by some unscrupulous car dealers and lenders entered." "Although the army, our soldiers for the purchase of cars in our normal financial education curriculum, the fact remains, that registered soldiers... educate junior keep an easy target for dishonest brokers." (See full letter)

McHugh's letter lists the results of an informal survey of the Ministry of defence of the officers, financial consulting for the four main branches of the US armed forces. The vast majority (79 percent) reported that they military members with car saw funding problems. Many of these customers, reported, provide could make it not their car payments.

The national independent auto boggles Dealer Association(NAIDA) not away from the issue.

"Try as we, can get rid them, there are still bad actors in our industry," says Steven Jordan, rescued-the Chief Operating Officer. "We know the growing problem with regard to vehicle purchases and financing of military personnel and we feel, is no place for it in our industry for those who use or want to cheat our military personnel with illegal disclosure or unfair & deceptive trade practices."

Protect yourself
There are things all military and civilian - should do when buying a vehicle.

Do your homework. Check out the car dealership. Talk with friends and visit the Web site of the better Business Bureau. Find out all the vehicles you are interested in are the current market price. It is easy. Just go to the Edmunds, Kelly Blue book, or TrueCar. Never shop alone. You should have someone to watch your back. Keep in mind that traders seller do that every day for a living. No matter what they say is their job, most of the money for each transaction. Let someone you pressure to sign the sales contract. Once you sign it, the car is yours and you are legally required to make the payments. There are no three days "cooling-off period" for car sales. Never a used car to buy until you have it by a qualified independent mechanic. You can damage by a prior wreck or potential mechanical problems on the ground. The small price you pay for this test (typically $100 to $150) you could save literally thousands of dollars on the street.
More detailed advice for U.S. service members is on "Boot camp for military car buyers."

You are always a break at the pump this summer

Joe Radle / Getty Images

Over the Memorial Day holiday, fuel prices lower about 27 cents as their national Summit appeared on approximately $3.65 per gallon, early April.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
It was not too long ago that American drivers have been with shrill headlines forecast $4, even $5 per gallon gas summer is welcomed.

It seemed quite plausible after quick runup in late winter and spring, prices at the pump comes back within a few cents of the record in July 2008. But a funny thing happened as well as the traditional driving season come on: fuel prices began to fall, and the downward trend may well through the summer.

About the Memorial Day holiday, which, the different tracking services showed that fuel prices to approximately $3.65 is popped, lower a gallon about 27 cents as their national summit in early April.

VW Beetle: mini 911 or a big mistake?

"Had me in January when the national average would have been that low on Memorial Day, I probably laughed would have," said Patrick DeHaan, a senior analyst at GasBuddy.com. We look forward, he told TheDetroitBureau.com, "prices could go either way," according to a number of factors, but now the trend seems to be to down to.

The tracking service shows that only since the holiday pump slip prices further: today to a national average of $3.646, down from $3.807 early May. In fact, rather than see a record high, figures driver now less than even a year ago, when the price of a gallon unleaded regular on average $3.779 at self-service pumps.

"I'm not sure who to thank, but I'll take it," laughed driver Jerry Benjamin after filling up his large Chevrolet Suburban at sunny's Sunoco in pleasant Ridge, MI "if I can save a quarter per gallon on a tank such as these, the $5, $10 per week extra for me and the family."

Who - thanks before - such as the blame for spring is a complex issue.

Dodge think caravan / Chrysler Town & country, killing

You might be tempted, the finger at Washington, and certainly, President Barack Obama came under fire, as fuel prices began just before the $4 per gallon. His challenger for the White House, Mitt Romney, has in the past month, that the President "gets full credit or blame for what this economy has happened and what has happened to gasoline prices under his watch."

GasBuddy DeHaan proposed in reality, was responsible the White House for the this year's run-up in fuel prices, nor its decline. To name a few, he and other analysts of the factors:

A fire in a refinery in Washington State last mix led to short supplies of gas, especially on the West Coast, a situation that deteriorated scheduled maintenance as other refineries or loss of production during the annual switch to summer fuels to reduce emissions during hot weather; Demand in China, India and other emerging economies stretching thin global oil supply lines, and refinery capacity has been way ahead; the nascent economic recovery in the United States led oil dealer beat up fuel prices even further.
But the recovery slower than expected, downward pressure on prices, is already. And so has the fact that Americans are not only less, but migrate to fuel efficient vehicles. A study by the Brookings Institution shows that the average vehicle about drove the same as in 1997 only 9,500 km by 2011.

Then, there is the economic crisis in Europe. With Spain's economy in free fall, and with a view to the view that the common currency of the value of the euro to leave Greece has against the dollar was tumbling. "And that is driving oil prices down," according to analyst DeHaan.

Maserati, Ferrari, Lambo plants locked after earthquake

As of Wednesday morning, benchmark crude oil below $90 a barrel had on the New York Mercantile Exchange, largely because of concerns over Europe, a decrease of 15% in just four weeks mark appeared.

"The fear of infection on Spanish and Greek debt and economic issues continue to force downward revision in the growth of the world economy and thus oil demand," wrote energy trader and consultant Knight Bush and associates in a new report.

"Volatility increases constantly," which warns report, but offers a long list of factors that could see again hammered driver: the unresolved problems of Iran's nuclear programme; the possibility of a positive solution in Greece; Further increase in demand from China and other emerging markets; and a significant upturn in the US economy.

First data indicate that American drivers long their good fortunes from climbing behind the wheel over the weekend of memorial day celebrated. The AAA estimated that 30.7 million people travel need took more than 50 kilometers, an increase of 400,000, this year. Meanwhile reported the American Petroleum Institute, that the demand for gasoline 0.9 percent in April 0.3 per cent for the year as a whole compared to proposed use could increase rapidly.

But now, at least motorists are always for a much-needed break, according to Tom Kloza, the Chief oil analyst at the oil price information service, and each talk about record gas prices is likely well into the future.

Volkswagen unlikely run 75 years

Volkswagen unlikely run 75 years

The Volkswagen beetle was a favorite of the crowd counterculture of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com of mysteries
Some manufacturers have more modest origin had or less had a chance to survive. However, as Volkswagen celebrates its 75th anniversary, has the German manufacturer shelled now a solid, dominated the world of the automobile.

It no longer is an a-model company, Volkswagen AG an industrial power plant for each segment of the market, such Econoboxes of high-mileage than the VW up! to toys for the super rich with models such as the Lamborghini Aventador and Bentley Mulsanne.

The basic Volkswagen Beetle introduced fuel consumption to the American public.

Those would have been a number of difficult to imagine if the company of the legendary Ferdinand Porsche was founded in May 1937. Better known for its high-performance sportscar, Porsche was commissioned by Adolph Hitler, to develop a small, affordable car for the German masses. It was known as the Volkswagen or peoples car. Only several decades later, that was the original model known as the beetle.

The new company was headquartered in Wolfsburg, an old castle town got an hour from Berlin, but the 990 Reichsmark produce Coupe, before production, to support the Nazi war machine was moved the Assembly line in operation. And it could have finished the story, it was not for the British Army major Ivan Hirst.

The VW bus had also a following among those who prefer down, a road less traveled.

He was assigned to that ravaged City shortly after the war ended and try the task again the VW plant to work. Buried under the rubble found painted Hirst a survivors of beetles, it green and order convinced British occupation troops to 20,000. Within a few years, the demand was booming. And sending some of the small cars from abroad began desperate for the foreign currency, the newly privatised Volkswagen.

The first, which reach the United States came in 1949. It was a kind of anti-car, anything other than the kind of large, heavy and gas-guzzling models that American buyers were shopping in ever-increasing numbers for. However, the beetle in resonance with a small community, and by the 1960s it was a symbol of the American counter-culture.

Disney's "Herbie, the Love Bug" Volkswagen is still more Popularitat-and sales-brought.

Soon were U.S. sales each year half a million came. But the German manufacturer wanted some new competition from Japan and according to the performance and quality of the manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda, and unwilling, in particular for the States sales steadily waned products to develop, also like the VW offer extended. By the early 1990's as a Volkswagen Ernst waiver of the US market.

They decided, it stick out, but shifted the attention to other markets, including China, where it today in a bitter struggle for supremacy with General Motors is locked. It was adding new brands such as Spanish Czech Skoda, and Italy's Lamborghini and Bentley of UK based on a shopping spree.

To achieve the first Volkswagen in the United States came in 1949.

Together those and other Marken Volkswagen AG one strong 8.39 million achieved sales 2011, automobile manufacturers, making the company the world's second largest behind only General Motors but before the leader of last year's Toyota, which was injured by earthquake and tsunami Japan. While Toyota again a good chance has its lead in 2012, Volkswagen explains King-of-the-Hill before a target of the automotive world officials at the end of the Decade. And their rising profits should the additional product needed to get there.

In the meantime, the German manufacturer has shifted course in the United States. After long ignoring the market and with closed its Westmoreland, PA., plant more than two decades ago, Volkswagen last year opened a new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a version of the midsize Passat developed specially for the United States produce sedan the payout came quickly, with booming demand suggesting that VW is only one the tripling of the U.S. band - could reach including the Audi - brand to 800,000 per year.

Today, Volkswagen is one of the broadest formations in the world of the automobile has. Much has changed in 75 years.

Today, the manufacturer of one of the widest is line-ups in the world of the automobile. And what is contains only in third-generation beetle. The small Coupe never again corresponds to the demand of the past decades to admit corporate officers, but it is an iconic symbol of the VW get hardly any success and the ability from the ashes.
