Toyota recalls Prius, Lexus hybrid for faulty brakes

Toyota recalls Prius, Lexus hybrid for faulty brakes
Paul A. Eisenstein The Detroit Bureau

The 2010 Prius may experience cracks in a key brake system component.
Two of Toyota’s high-profile hybrid models, notably including the best-selling Prius, are being recalled due to brake problems, according to the Japanese maker.

In all, about 87,000 vehicles are impacted, including Toyota Prius hatchbacks and Lexus HS 250h hybrids sold during the 2010 model-year. The maker does not say how many of each model are covered by the recall.

The problem is the result of a brake pressure accumulator that may develop a fatigue crack due to vibration. That would lead to the loss of at least some brake pressure. Toyota said it has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem.

The incident follows an earlier recall of some fourth-generation Toyota Prius models due to problems with electronic brake software programming. That issue impacted the way the popular hybrid melded its regenerative braking system -- used to recapture energy to recharge its batteries – and the car’s traditional, hydraulic brakes.

That earlier problem could create a sense that the brakes would briefly release during an aggressive stop, according to owners who first reported that earlier problem on TheDetroitBureau.com.

While the Toyota Prius has faced a few safety-related issues over its more than a dozen years on sale in the U.S., it has generally proved one of the maker’s most reliable product lines.

It is also one of its better selling models – and the most popular hybrid in the world. In the U.S., it has routinely outsold all other gas-electric models combined. So, the recall comes as a bit of an embarrassment.

The Lexus HS 250h, however, proved to be one of the weaker members of the luxury marque’s line-up despite sharing most of the underpinnings of the Prius.

Toyota plans to notify owners of both hybrid models directly in the weeks to come. It will ask them to visit dealers for an inspection and, if necessary, a replacement brake actuator will be installed at no charge.

Prius owners can immediately find out more, meanwhile, by visiting www.Toyota.com/recall, or calling 1-800-331-4331. Lexus owners, meanwhile, can check out www.Lexus.com/recall, or call 1-800-255-3987.

Chrysler recalls 469,000 SUVs over gearshift problem

Chrysler recalls 469,000 SUVs over gearshift problem
2010 Jeep Grand Cherokees sit at a Chrysler Jeep dealership in Centennial, Colo. in 2010. Chrysler announced a recall of nearly half a million SUVs for faulty gearshifts.
Chrysler is recalling about 469,000 SUVs worldwide to update software after some vehicles' circuit boards were found to be transmitting signals that trigger inadvertent gear shifts to neutral, the No. 3 U.S. automaker said Saturday.

Included are 2006- to 2010-model-year Jeep Commanders and 2005 to 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokees, of which about 295,000 are in the United States, 28,500 are in Canada and 4,200 are in Mexico. The remaining 141,000 are outside of North America.

Chrysler was aware of 26 accidents and 2 injuries related to the gearshift problem but no fatalities, a company spokesman said.

It was Chrysler's largest recall since more than 900,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs were recalled worldwide in November to fix a part that could cause airbags to deploy inadvertently.

Chrysler, an affiliate of Italy's Fiat SpA, also said it is recalling 532 2013-model-year Ram 1500 pickup trucks in the United States and Canada, a third of which remain in dealer inventories, to inspect and possibly replace windshield defrosting and defogging components.

Additionally, the company said it is recalling about 5,330 right-hand-drive 2008 to 2012 Jeep Wranglers to install dust shields to prevent dust buildup that could compromise airbag operation. All of the vehicles, used mostly for rural mail delivery, are in the United States.

Chrysler said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries linked to the Ram and Wrangler recall issues.

The company said it will directly contact affected customers and make the repairs for free.

Chrysler, which emerged from a government-sponsored bankruptcy four years ago, last month reported a steep drop in quarterly profits due to an aggressive new-vehicle launch schedule, but said it was on track to meet its business targets, expecting a strong second half of 2013.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and its Italian parent Fiat, which currently owns a 58.5 percent share of the U.S. automaker, said there was a 50-50 chance that Fiat's buyout of Chrysler would be finalized by June 2014.

Honda recalls that more than 200,000 vehicles for shift problem locking

Honda recalls that more than 200,000 vehicles for shift problem locking
Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau - 2 days

Already hammered by a series of recalls, so far more than 1 million have involved vehicles since the beginning of the year, Honda added another 200,000 sedans, crossovers and minivans to the list of the latest recall, the problems with the manufacturer-shift interlock system.

The new recall comes as a particular embarrassment of the manufacturer to put Luxury Division, implications for the recently launched Acura RDX, which was intended, a high-tech-Halo around the brand.

About 17,500 of the 2013 sedans from the recall, along with 128,000 Honda CR-VS and 59,000 Odyssey minivans, Acura RDX the latter two models fall while he sold model year 2012 and 2013.

Analysts say that the width of the callback reflects the fact that the automakers are trying today to share components from a variety of products to reduce costs. But the strategy can backfire, if a problem occurs.

In this case, Honda, means "be to comply with temperatures after the first use of the vehicle shift lever mechanism can move the vehicle transmission from the Park position to depressingly possible without the brake pedal."

The issue is particularly sensitive for Honda had to could the 870,000 "outliers" Odyssey vans December last year remember, because it is inadvertently moved without transfer to Park will be closed. 370,000 Honda cars recall previously involved in a similar two years.

This latest recall comes just a week after the Japanese manufacturer announced that it lead 470,000 older sedans, vans and crossovers due to faulty airbags, the misfire or even, remember that fire a vehicle would.

In this case was Honda of one of the four manufacturers with airbags, the supplied parts of the Japanese manufacturer TAKATA. Overall, more than 3 million vehicles are covered worldwide by this product recall.

Meanwhile, Honda announced another in January airbag-related could remember, do this one because of missing rivets, which provide safety equipment not properly in a crash.

Was known for its quality and reliability that Honda reminds one of the two top brands in terms of the number of vehicles in the US market for the last four years.

The Japanese manufacturer says it has received no complaints from customers, Word crashes or injuries related to the shift interlock problem. But the situation could cause problems if not corrected. It plans to inform the affected customers directly by mid-May and repairs free of charge.

Chrysler recalls 120,000 vehicles for airbag problems
Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau - 4 days

Chrysler is due to problems with the airbag warning lights that trigger without apparent reason, models recalled 120,000 of the full-size.

It is the latest in a series of industry-wide security-related issues in connection with faulty wiring, which increasingly reflect the complexity of today's high-tech cars. In some cases, the problems were a mere inconvenience, but in other cases, the problems can fire and intervention of braking systems, which leads without apparent reason, cause serious problems, such as vehicle trigger a potential loss of vehicle control.

The new Chrysler recall includes 119.500 his Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans and Dodge Challenger muscle Coupe. Must trigger the airbag warning lights apparently baseless and does not mean that she are disabled.

The manufacturer said it was advised of the problem but customer complaints, adding that there were no reports of injuries or accidents. It raises faulty wiring for the problem.

The recall extends between April to December 2011, some marketed as 2011 models, vehicles produced during the model year 2012

Owner of the problem starting this month will be notified and repairs be carried out free of charge. The manufacturer plans to reimburse owner previously used for warning light repairs have paid.

The 2013 version of the Dodge Challenger was subject to a separate wiring-related recall that less than a month ago announced. In this case, improper wiring can overheat and cause a fire. The producers went so far as to warn owners park their vehicles until repairs could be made.

At about the same time Honda announced a short circuit in a control unit stability to cause as many as 250,000 different vehicles, their brakes too short that could run without the involvement of the driver.

Meanwhile, shorting Toyota, began the year with a reminder at 752.000 vehicles, this could be the airbags on some models Corolla and Matrrix as well as inadvertently providing pre-tensioners by front seat could cause. The Japanese giant recalled several million products through a faulty drivers side window switch which can cause fires, the smoke or even vehicle last year.

Industry analysts note that today's cars of high-tech systems, the rival - and exceed in the rule - the complexity of the modern consumer electronic devices become. Where problems with a defective circuit board on a Smartphone or an audio system is a disadvantage or lead the customer the device to a memory swap out the major risks in the face of defective vehicle control loops is reminiscent to a steady increase in the related.

Apparently in contrast, problems with conventional mechanical defects, such as E.g. engine, on the decline according to a study by J.D. power and associates.

Subaru recalls 200,000 cars for braking issue

Subaru recalls 200,000 cars for braking issue
Reuters – 4 days

Subaru is recalling about 200,000 Legacy and Outback sedans and wagons from model years 2005-2009 to check for corroded brake lines.

Subaru said the vehicles were sold in 20 "salt belt" states, mainly in the Northeast and Midwest, and most were built at its U.S. assembly plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

An official recall notice released Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that "salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines."

NHTSA said corrosion could cause brake fluid leakage, which could result in longer vehicle stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash.

Subaru on Tuesday said "no reports, accidents, injuries or incidents of failure have occurred." It said the problem was discovered by its Japanese parent during an internal testing program.

Subaru in its NHTSA recall filing said vehicle brake lines could be perforated after exposure to salt over seven or more winter seasons.

Owners can take their cars to Subaru dealers for a free inspection. Dealers will rustproof the affected area with anti-corrosion wax and, if necessary, replace the brake lines.

Toyota recalls 310,000 SUVs for seatbelt problem
Paul A. Eisenstein , The Detroit Bureau – 6 days

Toyota is recalling about 310,000 of its distinctive FJ Cruiser SUVs, the majority of which were sold in the United States, dues to a seatbelt problem.

The announcement is the latest in a series of safety-related problems for the maker which topped the list among manufacturers in terms of the number of vehicles it recalled in the U.S. for three of the last four years.

According to Toyota, the problem involves seatbelts that could fail because of excess wear.

"The seatbelt retractors for the driver and front passenger seat belts are mounted on the rear doors of the vehicles," Toyota explained in a press statement. "Due to insufficient strength of the rear door panel, cracks may develop over an extended period of time if the rear door is repeatedly and forcefully closed."

A total of 310,000 of the brawny vehicles are involved in the latest recall which covers the 2007 through 2013 model-years. Of those, 209,000 were sold in the U.S., while another 52,000 were in the Middle East. Other countries involved in the recall are Canada, Australia, China and various parts of Latin America and Oceania.

The automaker says it will notify owners once it comes up with a specific solution for the problem, and repairs will be made at no cost. Owners can find out more at www.toyota.com/recall or by calling 1-800-331-4331.

The newest recall comes less than two months after the maker called back more than 1 million vehicles sold by its Toyota and Lexus brands due to problems including defective airbags and faulty windshield wipers.

While the various Toyota brands continue to top most charts in terms of initial quality and longer-term reliability, Toyota has had an ongoing problem when it comes to safety-related recalls. The maker was stung by a series of issues related to so-called unintended acceleration in 2009 and 2010 and has been forced to recall more vehicles than any other manufacturer during three of the last four years. In 2012, that involved 3.9 million vehicles.

The maker has also been repeatedly fined for failing to meet federal recall guidelines and recently agreed to take steps to improve its response when safety issues are discovered.

With the latest service action, Toyota’s recall count for 2013 is already over 1.2 million in the U.S. alone.

GM recalls more than 69 K cars that could roll away

GM recalls more than 69 K cars that could roll away

Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
General Motors is recalling almost 70,000 late-model of SUVs, pickups and vans rolling away after parked latches, which could make the vehicles due to faulty transmission.

More than a dozen different 2013 models are the callback, 54.686 of vehicles sold 6.310 in Canada, with almost 8,000 more delivered in the United States, in Mexico and overseas markets included involved especially the Mideast.

The vehicles can castle with a broken Park as well as a faulty steering column lock component are equipped cable. Under certain conditions this driver allows, of the vehicle key accidentally removed, even if the transmission not in Park position was moved.

The error can also State-contracted delivery sheath, so that a motorist who accidentally switch from the Park in a different gear, override without your foot on the brake.

"These scenarios can roll away the vehicle after the driver stopped the vehicle leading to a crash-possible vehicle and/or personal injury, was" GM said administration into an application with the national highway traffic safety.

A GM official says that there has been no crashes or injuries, but have reported. The defect was discovered by workers at the GM Arlington assembly plant last month.

All vehicles from the recall covered were produced between November and December last year and 2013 models.

Include Cadillac Escalade the 2013 and Escalade ESV Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, express, Silverado HD, LD Silverado, suburban and Tahoe; and GMC Savana, Sierra HD, Sierra LD, Yukon and Yukon XL.

Most cars are actually probably still sitting in transit or on many traders. Only about 1,000 have probably already been delivered to customers and GM plans, these owners bring their trucks for inspection to inform and, if necessary, replace the steering column. Repairs are free of charge.

This is the second large recall of 2013 after a day after Subaru was known that 634,000 owners of a possible broken sign it, causing a short circuit and possibly a vehicle fire could but only about 54,000 of these vehicles actually need repairs.

The GM recall follows 800,000 minivans and crossover points less than a month after Honda recalled, including his Odyssey and pilot models correct a similar transmission errors, the vehicles could roll away is parked after.

Subaru recalls 634,000 vehicles for lighting problem

Subaru recalls 634,000 vehicles for lighting problem

Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
The new year has got off a bad start - for Subaru, anyway. The manufacturer is forced to recall almost 634,000 sedans, wagons and crossovers due to an electrical problem, a vehicle can cause a fire.

More specifically, Subaru says, owner of 633.842 relatively late model vehicles informs them that they are subject to a recall, although only about 54,000 of these Subaru must undergo products actually repairs.

Subaru is just the latest in a number of manufacturers, including Toyota, Ford and General Motors, which have had to recall millions of vehicles over the last 12 months due to defects that can cause fires. In this case, the problem lies in a faulty puddle lamp where wiring, short could, if exposed to moisture after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"There have been no cases of injury or accidents," loud Subaru spokesman Mike McHale, although the manufacturer where the short occurred Word retains "less than 10" requests, resulting in smoke. So far, no vehicle has actually caught fire.

Several similar electrical short questions have plagued Japanese manufacturer, in recent months, in particular faulty drivers door window switch, to have led to a series of product recalls at Toyota. In October the producer 7,43 million vehicles with this switch - around one third - who sold the largest recall in the history of Toyota announced a recall notice thereof in the United States. Motor vehicles were also a small number of General same switch used and by a previous recall.

In the case of the Subaru, the latest customer service campaign covers 633.842 vehicles. In fact, the manufacturer believes that only 53.999 which actually have wiring the puddle lamp, but it was not clearly identify which vehicles are because the lamps were installed by dealer and no accurate and complete records exist. As a result, Subaru contact owners, all 2009 to 2012 Forester and 2006 to 2012 Tribeca frequency switch and 2010 and 2011 legacy and Outback models, to them to see if they have the optional puddle lamps. Who will need repairs. These uncertain, can go to a dealer for inspection.

The puddle lamps are just the sideview mirrors and lights below, if the vehicles are unlocked. You can water or humidity leads to a short gain. Subaru adds an additional protection to prevent a fire if the wires out short.

It plans to formally next month to inform owners and make repairs free of charge.

While the final figures for the year 2012 not yet calculated been there is preliminary evidence that the industry can get close or 15.5 million vehicles affected by recalls in 2011 exceed, if non-matching remembers the 20.1 million in the year 2010.

While Detroit, Korean and European decision makers all essential service actions in the course of the year are confronted, seem Japanese makers have led the list with Toyota and Honda all but certain to top the chart in terms of the total number of vehicles in 2012 influenced.

Honda recalled nearly 3 million vehicles equipped with faulty transmissions, which can cause extra vehicles in the third quarter alone, including the most recent products; and the Toyota switch fire question covered approximately 2.5 million vehicles in the United States in October.

Honda recalls more than 800 K vans and SUVs

Honda recalls more than 800 K vans and SUVs

Paul A. Eisenstein, the Detroit Bureau
American Honda minivans and crossover utility vehicles, to solve, a problem reminiscent of more than 800,000 vehicles slip out of Park and rolling away could cause.

The Japanese manufacturer, has traditionally known for its high quality, reliability and customer satisfaction through an ongoing series of recalls have been slammed in recent years and security-related callbacks seems on the right track for the dubious distinction of having involved in more vehicles than any other manufacturer, which for the second year in a row in the United States to be active.

The ignition lock question, a device to ensure that the key can only be removed when the vehicle is shifted into Park. But the mechanism for the vehicles of the recall covered wear in the course of time and thus the key be removed, when the gearbox in neutral position is or some other gear, so that the vehicle may roll away and a crash could occur.

While numerous injuries back reminds himself have connected, a statement from Honda was connected to recent recall claimed only "a few similar incidents, including two that the supposedly minor injuries have led."

This conflicts with a statement of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration when it began its latest investigation into the problem in October. It reported 42 complaints involving separate from 2003 and 2004 Honda Odyssey models, with 26 vehicles rolling away and 16 thereof involved in some form of collision. A vehicle rolled 600 feet and struck a retaining wall, while other rolled two blocks, to end only after the collision with a brick mailbox.

The latest recall covers pilot crossover 318,000 Honda Odyssey vans and 259,000 Honda sold, during the 2003 and 2004 model years while 230,000 Acura MDX transitions between 2003 and 2006 sold were also added to the service action. At the beginning of this 807.000 vehicles in the United States marketed remember Honda that one sold a further 63,000 vehicles in 28 other countries.

The current problem is a problem, which has already plagued the manufacturer since 2003 and was extended to a series of recalls over the past decade to 2.2 million vehicles.

But Honda has a variety of other security-related problems in recent years.

During 2011 Honda was reminiscent of 15.5 million vehicles for security-related issues in the United States responsible for 3.8 million. Due to the latest ignition problem of the manufacturers in the vicinity of or even could surpass even once leader and overall to dovetail the.

The only other manufacturer capable of dubious Toyota challenge Honda's recall tally is the numerous security-related topics has had its own. The problem also has an impact, the 2013 Ford Fusion. All in all are affected approximately 89,000 of both models - see Ford's best-selling nameplates.

The latest recall could be a setback not only for the models by 2013-fusion and escape, but for Ford itself. The manufacturer has in recent months in a number of surveys have been hammered satisfaction, quality, and reliability.

According to Ford, the problem includes vehicles only with 1.6 liter turbo EcoBoost engine, an optional Powertrain developed in order to better risks and performance improves. Ford says which can overheat the motor and coolant leakage. She in turn could catch fire if it comes into contact with hot engine components such as E.g. the silencers."We have identified a problem and take measures in the best interest of our customers,"Steve said Kenner, Director of Ford's automotive safety Office. Chrysler recalls over 900,000 Jeeps for airbag issue

Paul A. Eisenstein, TheDetroitBureau.com

Chrysler is recalling over 919,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty SUVs worldwide due to a potential defect that can cause their airbags to unexpectedly inflate while the vehicles are being driven.

A total of 775,000 older versions of the two Jeep models will be impacted in the U.S., along with 49,000 sold in Canada, 22,000 in Mexico and the rest distributed to other global markets. While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem has not led to any accidents there have been a number of minor injuries caused by the inadvertent airbag deployments.

The latest recall adds to the growing tally of safety actions related to airbag safety defects. Ford, Honda and Hyundai are among the list of other makers who have been affected in recent years.

NHTSA reports that the Jeep problem involves Grand Cherokees produced in the 2002 through 2004 model-years, and Liberty SUVs produced in 2002 and 2003. According to the safety agency, the problem has been linked to a defective part in the computer used to control the airbags.

Under normal circumstances, airbags rely on a network of sensors that indicate when and where a collision has occurred – and on more recent models, sensors also detect the severity of a crash and where occupants are sitting in the vehicle. The Jeeps involved in the recall may see their front or side-impact airbags inflate even if they aren’t involved in a collision. Pre-tensioning seatbelts may also be triggered.

A Chrysler spokesman noted that the problem has occurred in less than three-hundreths of a percent of the Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee models on the road.

Nonetheless, after completing a year-long investigation, NHTSA determined the problem occurred 215 times, causing 81 minor injuries – but while the inadvertent airbag deployments have not been linked to any crashes, the safety agency warns that drivers could be startled into losing control of their vehicles.

Chrysler says it plans to notify owners by January and repairs will be made to the electrical system at no charge to consumers.

Automotive manufacturers have seen a number of airbag issues pop up in recent years forcing them to recall large numbers of vehicles. In July, Hyundai recalled 220,000 Sonata sedans and Santa Fe SUVs from the 2007 to 2009 model-years because sensors designed to protect small children in an airbag deployment might not work. The maker also recalled nearly 23,000 late-model Sonatas for a separate airbag problem.

Ford announced the recall of 154,000 Fiesta models due to airbag problems last month, and the maker previously called back 1.5 million vehicles – including 1.2 million F-Series pickups – due to unexpected airbag deployments.

Honda, meanwhile, has recalled over 2.5 million vehicles sold through the Honda and Acura brands because they could deploy with too much force, sending deadly shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The problem was linked to at least two deaths.

Because of the potential dangers, NHTSA has put a high priority on discovering and fixing airbag problems.

Honda recalls 573,000 Accords to fix faulty hoses

Honda recalls 573,000 Accords to fix faulty hoses

The Detroit Bureau

Honda will have to repair nearly 600,000 Accords due to the latest fire-related recall.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau
Honda appears to be well on its way to again leading the market in terms of the number of recalled vehicles. The maker has confirmed more than 625,000 of its Accord and Acura TL sedans will be impacted by the latest service action due to a potential fire hazard.

The new development actually expands on an earlier recall involving 52,613 of the Acura models sold during the 2007 and 2008 model-years. The maker has now added another 573,147 Accords equipped with V-6 engines marketed during the 2003 through 2007 model-years.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the power steering hoses in those vehicles could deteriorate prematurely and lead to a leakage of fluid. If that comes into contact with hot engine parts, such as the catalytic converter, the fluid could catch fire.

So far, federal regulators say they have received one report of an actual vehicle fire – which did not result in injuries.

The midsize Accord and the Acura TL share many common components – a practice widespread in the auto industry and one that often leads to recalls involving numerous different nameplates. The Accord itself is the second-best-selling passenger car nameplate in the U.S. An all-new model was recently introduced for the 2013 model-year.

Honda intends to notify owners of the latest recall this month and will make repairs at no cost to consumers. However, the maker has cautioned that due to a need to produce replacement parts in such large volume the repairs might not be completed until sometime in early 2013.

Owners can find out more about the recall by contacting Honda at 800-999-1009 or NHTSA through its vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.

While Honda has built a significant reputation for quality over the years, the maker has experienced a spurt of safety-related recalls in recent years and led the list among all manufacturers in the U.S. market last year. At the current pace it is on track to top that list again in 2012.
