Ford, Toyota, a team on hybrid truck

DEARBORN, Michigan - Ford and Toyota said Monday that they will work together on a gas electric hybrid engine for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

The company signed a contract to share development costs, say that they make more affordable technology customers and want to bring to the market faster.

Both companies now sell hybrid cars, but trucks need to another system with tow and haul heavy loads.

"Our cooperation with Ford a move in the hybrid technology in sport utility vehicles and trucks, make widely available," said Takeshi Uchiyamada, Toyota executive Vice President for research and development, in a statement Monday.
