Chrysler's ad created buzz urgently needed

Monday morning quarterbacks will always dissect the passes, fumbles and touchdowns in Sunday?s Super Bowl game, but the event has generated at least as much hindsight analysis for the 60 or so commercials that spaced out the game ? and few are generating more buzz than a long and cinematically-styled ad that had rap star Eminem pitching for Chrysler.


With rare exception, the initial surveys show the $9 million, non-traditional 2-minute commercial kept Super Bowl viewers in their seats ? and it got them talking about a company that, just months ago many were ready to write off as dead, experts say.


?Even in places where you wouldn?t expect to get a strong positive reaction [to a Detroit brand], like L.A. and Seattle, the reaction was extremely good,? said Art Spinella, director of the Oregon-based research firm CNW Marketing.

?The negatives on it were so small as to be inconsequential,? he added.


Although the ad focused on the new Chrysler 200 sedan, it didn?t contain the traditional pitch for a new car. Instead, it showed the Detroit rapper Eminem driving through the city of Detroit, seen in both its rawness and its glory, with the facade of a crumbling building and empty abandoned fields as well as the lavish Westin Book-Cadillac hotel and restored Fox Theater.


The spot challenged viewers to reconsider their ideas about Detroit, and with the music from Eminem?s film ?8 Mile? in the background the ad concluded with Eminem joining a gospel choir on stage and delivering a message that ran 11 words in total:


?This is the Motor City, and this is what we do.?


Just two years ago it wasn?t clear if any of Detroit?s ?Big Three? automakers would be doing anything for very much longer, and certainly not Chrysler.


President Barack Obama initially rejected expanding on the temporary rescue approved by his predecessor, George W. Bush, agreeing to offer a new bailout only if Chrysler entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and emerged under the guidance of the Italian automaker, Fiat ? the only automaker that appeared interested in saving the Detroit manufacturer.


Even after Chrysler emerged from court protection in June 2010, its future appeared uncertain. Fiat?s chief executive Sergio Marchionne admitted in a day-long November 2009 briefing for analysts and media that Chrysler?s turnaround would, at best, take a number of years.


Indeed, going into the 2011 model-year conventional wisdom held that Chrysler had little to brag about ? certainly nothing that would justify putting on a commercial four times the length of a normal car ad and during a television event where each second of air time officially costs some $100,000.


But Chrysler has ?delivered some surprises? recently, according to analyst George Peterson of research firm AutoPacific. The automaker has experienced strong demand for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was one of two Chrysler products (the other was the all-new Dodge Durango) to vie for the North American Truck of the Year award, presented at last month?s 2011 Detroit auto show.


The two Chrysler vehicles ultimately lost out to the newly-redesigned Ford Explorer, which took the top honor at the show. Still, last Monday the Jeep was named the only U.S. finalist for the World Car of the Year award, going up against such European powerhouses as Audi (with its new A8) and Mercedes-Benz (with the gull-winged, $250,000 SLS supercar).


Chrysler is also winning praise for the all-new version of the 300 sedan, which will reach showrooms in the coming weeks. The updated car is getting solid reviews, and even the 200 sedan that Eminem was shown driving in Chrysler?s Super Bowl ad has received unexpectedly positive reviews.


Specifically, Chrysler?s new models are receiving rave reviews for the dramatic upgrading of their normally Spartan cabins which, acknowledges interior design director Karl Busse, have traditionally been a sea of ?battleship gray plastic.?


Then there?s the Fiat 500, the microcar Chrysler?s Italian parent is shortly to launch in the U.S. Known in Europe as the ?Cinquecento,? the car will be one of the smallest on U.S. highways and a distinct alternative to the big trucks, SUVs and crossovers Chrysler is best known for.


Last month, Fiat met the first of three criteria the Obama Administration set the carmaker for it to increase its stake in Chrysler in 5 percent increments, from 20 percent to 35 percent. And Marchionne, the Canadian-educated executive who serves as CEO for both carmakers, has expressed plans to pay back $5.8 billion in U.S. and Canadian government loans, which would allow Fiat to land a full 51 percent stake in Chrysler.


Last weekend the Fiat executive had to apologize for labeling the 11 percent interest rate on those government loans as a ?shyster? rate, but he also reversed his previously skeptical approach to fully merging the two car companies, saying, ?Who knows? In the next two or three years we could be looking at one entity.?


Marchionne also hinted that the headquarters for a consolidated Fiat/Chrysler could be based in Detroit rather than Turin, Italy, or split between the two. The executive later backed off the last comment, but observers note that Marchionne has been using Fiat?s expanding U.S. base to press Italian unions ? and possibly the Italian government ? to offer much sought-after concessions.


The dual CEO has plenty of work ahead of him, especially on the U.S. side of the trans-Atlantic alliance. Late last month Marchionne revealed a $652 million loss for all of 2010, although that amount was down from $8 billion in red ink seen the year before. And, significantly, Chrysler posted an operating profit of $198 million for the fourth quarter. The company says it will see a profit for between $200 million and $500 million for all of 2011.


The carmaker?s double-digit January sales increase is a sign it?s moving in the right direction. Indeed, it is struggling to meet demand for the Grand Cherokee, which has seen sales soar 130 percent. After several years of steady declines, Chrysler has now had sales gains for 10 straight months.


Yet there are still some worrisome challenges for the U.S. automaker. A wave of new vehicles, due to start rolling out for 2012, must prove Chrysler and Fiat can work together on global product platforms. Those cars ? and the ?place-holder? offerings of recent months ? must overcome the maker?s reputation for low-quality vehicles.


Chrysler has been the one domestic carmaker ?that hasn?t improved,? complained David Champion, chief auto tester for Consumer Reports magazine, during a presentation several months ago. But looking at some of the maker?s latest offerings, he added, ?They seem to have a different mindset to build a quality vehicle? since hooking up with Fiat.


Whether that mindset will translate into great new products remains to be seen, Champion cautioned.


It also remains to be seen whether American motorists will respond positively to the new vehicles. Even with the recent sales gains, Chrysler is a mere shell of its former self. Indeed, it?s not even on the radar screen for most U.S. car buyers these days, noted Spinella.


But there?s ?a hum? out there and it?s starting to get louder, Spinella added. If Chrysler can continue to deliver unexpected product ? and back that product with more breakthrough advertising ? ?that could turn into a serious buzz,? which in turn could translate into a turnaround this carmaker so desperately needs.

Japan crisis could squeeze car world production

While the immediate focus of Japan is to rescue the wounded, recovery of the dead and caring for survivors, slowly natural disaster comes the island nation with the impact of last week on their largest industry: automotive manufacturing.

"The disaster will have an impact and not only in Japan,", said an auto analyst George Peterson automotive research and consulting firm AutoPacific.

Honda recalls almost 700,000 small cars

An annual rate of 15,000 miles per vehicle and fuel does the input expenditure of $2.899 for regular, $3.189 for premium and $3.186 for diesel fuel powered. Auto leasing making comeback with new fall

Car leasing is back!


If you've watched any major sporting event on television recently, you've seen the evidence. Advertisements constantly screech that drivers can get a new car for under $300, $250, even $200 per month. Your ears and eyes aren’t lying. Edmunds.com says leases accounted for 1 out of every 4 new car purchases in December, the highest level in five years.


As you might imagine, this development is a mixed bag for consumers.


Leasing was left for dead after the financial crisis of 2008, which took with it several automaker financing subsidiaries. But now, it's springtime in lease-land. According to Edmunds.com, there are currently more than 40 new car models available for lease for $200 per month or less nationally -- everything from a Honda Civic to a Mitsubishi Outlander. And regional dealers are offering even more “low, low prices.” Drivers across the country can even get a Nissan Sentra that sets them back only $139 a month.


"Honda and Toyota have really stepped it up on their lease deals," said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst for Edmunds.com. Both manufactures have products lines that are “late in the cycle,” and they are pushing leases in an attempt to stay competitive, she said.


Jeff Bartlett, the online deputy auto editor for Consumer Reports, said leases have returned for a simple reason: “Factories don't build used cars.”


Lease deals with tempting low monthly payments are a time-tested way of moving new cars off dealership lots.


But if those prices are so low that you think there must be a catch, you win the Red Tape skeptical reader award. Leases have always been a complicated affair for consumers. Those low monthly payments come laden with some of the finest small print the auto industry can muster. Despite the pleasing sound of low payments, leasing is usually an expensive way to finance a car. But this new crop of leases have even trickier terms and deeper financial potholes, meaning careless buyers could easily end up with a lemon of a deal.


Marketers who design lease deals spend a long time playing with spreadsheets and data that show certain price points are very appetizing to consumes, said Bartlett.


"The first question is always, 'How much can you spend a month?’ A number that has tested well is $199," he said.


But what does $199 really get you? Not as far as you’d think. Traditionally, car leases have allotted drivers 1,000 miles per month, resulting in leases that look like this: 36 month/36,000 miles, 24 month/24,000 miles, etc. Overages come with hefty price tags, usually costing drivers at least 15 cents extra per mile.


Anyone who's ever driven prematurely out of an automobile warranty knows that's not a very generous allotment. But many new lease deals undercut even that miserly mileage limit.


Why 10,500 miles per year?
One new lease being offered by Ford dealers lets consumers drive away with a new Fusion for $199 per month for 24 months -- but they are capped at 21,000 total, or 10,500 miles per year. A consumer who drives that Fusion using the terms of an old-fashioned lease, and returns the car with the odometer reading 24,000 miles, will be handed a $450 bill. Spreading that penalty out across the 24 months makes that $199/month deal equate to a $219/month deal.


That's still not bad, but it's important for consumers to know exactly what they are getting into when they are signing a lease. Nothing is worse than buying a new car and being afraid to hit the road, lest you drive yourself from a good deal to a bad deal. For example, average 15,000 during the aforementioned Fusion lease, and you'll find a $1,350 bill waiting when you return the car.


Luxury car brands like Jaguar, Saab, and Acura have used low-mileage leases for a while, but now they've spread across mid-range car categories, Caldwell said.


Bartlett warned that many new leases also require larger-than-normal down payments ("capital reduction" payments) to arrive at those seemingly magical monthly payments.


"You can end up with some really weird terms," he said. "I've seen more in the last six months, to get those low rates for advertisements there are very high down payments. I've seen some really big numbers ... which send a confusing mixed message to consumers. A person attracted to $199 per month might not have $4,365 to use as a down payment."


Here's one such complicated arrangement. Mini-USA is offering a $199/month deal on its 2011 Cooper 2-door hatchback. Sounds good. But buyers must show up with $2,727 as a down payment. And they must drive the small car small distances -- no more than 833 miles per month. The punishment for excessive mileage? A not mini 20 cents per mile. Someone who drives the normal 36,000 during that three-year Cooper lease ends up with a $1,200 bill at the end. Drive 15,000 miles per year, and the bill is a whopping $3,000.


Of course, drivers who exceed their mileage have the option of buying their car at the end of the lease, paying the agreed-upon "residual value." But Bartlett said end-of-lease purchases are almost always a bad deal.


"You always end up paying more for the car than someone would who just walked in off the street to buy it," he said.


RED TAPE WRESTLING TIPS
So should you consider leasing? Despite these booby traps, yes, you should. Just remember that car dealers have invented this genre -- and are now reinventing it -- to make money. They usually have the spreadsheet on their side.


Leases only work well for certain kinds of buyers. The most obvious category: Someone who drives limited miles and relishes the smell of a new car every two to four years. Traveling salesmen and other mobile workers who use their automobile for employment-based travel will find leasing brings with it certain tax advantages -- such as greater and simpler tax deductions.


And Bartlett said there's a new category for leases, courtesy of our shaky economy: Workers who've been temporarily transferred to a new location or who find themselves in transient circumstances, such as recent graduates.


"Let's say a person knows they'll be somewhere new for only a couple of years,” he said. “... Maybe they don't want to be obligated for five or six years of car payments to purchase, and they'll need that money for something else. In this economy leases can appeal to someone in a flexible or an uncertain situation. … It is generally a more expensive way to acquire a vehicle, but sometimes the flexibility it brings is worth it.”


So how do you get a good deal on a lease? Ignoring the offers you see or hear in advertisements is a good start. The car you'll buy will always vary from the deal you've heard about -- there will be sales tax and license plates to pay for, let alone floor mats, keyless entry and the sun roof. Add in a few extras, and a $199/month deal becomes a $273/month deal very quickly.


Never acquire a vehicle using with the "how much can you pay each month?" method. Instead, go to your bank and negotiate separate financing. Bring that bank car loan blank check to the dealer, which shows the dealer you can pay cash for the car. Then negotiate the out-the-door price. Once that grand total is determined, ask the dealer to make its best loan offer and best lease offer on the car.


"You want to say, ‘I can buy the car for this price, base the lease on that,’" Bartlett said. Working from total price first will always get you a better deal, he said.


When you lease, the total price will be cited as “capitalized cost.” Make sure that price is, at most, the MSRP for the car minus manufactures rebates, your down payment and the value of any trade in.


Finally, Barlett recommends something you rarely hear -- lease a used car. Dealers can arrange financing for 2- or 3-year old cars, and so can other lending institutions. While new-car incentives from manufacturers won't be available to sweeten the deal, that loss is more than offset by the traditional 20 percent or so in value that the car loses the day it's driven off the lot. Leasing a used car can be the cheapest way to drive off feeling like a million bucks.
